Over 2,000 Reports Per Year
Poison control centers now get over 2,000 calls per year about serious side effects from consuming energy drinks experienced just by children under the age of six. This represents 40 percent of all poison center calls for "energy drink exposure," and the children are often suffering abnormal heart rhythms or seizures. The drinks in question may contain over 300 mg of caffeine, the equivalent of three cups of coffee, and look and taste like sweetened beverages. Most of the parents were not even aware that the child had consumed an energy drink. Since the poison center figures don't include parents who took the child directly to a clinic or ER, researchers suspect the 2,000 number is merely "the tip of the iceberg." The American Heart Association released the nationwide study.
