1 Brief Walks Negate Ill Effects of Sitting

Previous studies have found that sitting for extended periods, a basic requirement in millions of jobs, is associated with shortened lifespans, heightened cholesterol levels, and cardiovascular and metabolic disease, and it has been proposed that this is because unused lower muscles are not efficiently pumping blood to the heart for hours on end. Now, researchers at the Indiana University School of Health have confirmed that as little as one hour of sitting can in fact impair this blood-flow function by up to fifty percent. But they also found that volunteers who sat for three straight hours could totally prevent this functional decline by breaking up their sitting time with leisurely five minute walks, as slowly as 2 miles per hour, at the half-hour, 90-minute and 2.5-hour marks.

2 “Comfort Foods” Don’t Actually Work

The "comfort food" concept appears to be baseless. University of Minnesota researchers conducted four experiments wherein subjects were questioned about their moods, asked to name foods guaranteed to make them feel better, shown videos known to elicit negative feelings, and supplied (or not) with their stated comfort foods. The findings: down moods "naturally dissipate over time" regardless of what, or how much, or even whether one eats, despite the fact that over 80 percent of the subjects were confident their chosen foods would improve their mood. "We found no justification for people to choose comfort foods when they are distressed," thereby "removing an excuse for eating a high-calorie or high-fat food" to counteract anxiety, depression, loneliness or any other negative mood.
