1 High-Action TV Increases Viewer Snacking

What you're watching on TV may influence how much in the way of snacks, and calories, you consume while watching. A Cornell study had 94 undergrads watch either 20 minutes of the sci-fi action flick "The Island," the same 20 minutes but with no sound, or 20 minutes of Charlie Rose conducting an interview, in each case while amply supplied with M&Ms, cookies carrots and grapes. The movie watchers put away an average of seven ounces of snacks for a total of 354 calories, compared to about half the weight amount and just 215 calories for the Rose watchers. Soundless "Island" watchers ate moderately less than those with audio, for an average 314 calories. Researchers suggest that watching high-action programming can lead to distracted, mindless snacking, at least among young adults.

2 Tomatoes May Lower Prostate Cancer Risk

Eating tomatoes may lower prostate cancer risk, finds a new study from the Universities of Bristol, Cambridge and Oxford that assessed diets and lifestyles of 1,806 prostate cancer patients. The study found that men who ate 10+ servings per week of tomatoes reduced their prostate cancer risk by 18%. Researchers think that lycopene, an antioxidant found in tomatoes, is the key to lowered risk as it fights off toxins that can cause DNA and cell damage. Researchers say more studies are needed to confirm their findings” but that men should eat “a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, maintain a healthy weight and stay active.” Prostate cancer affects 1 in 7 American men and is the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. according to the American Cancer Society.

3 How to Decrease Heart Failure Risk: Exercise

One hour of moderate exercise each day or 30 minutes of vigorous exercise daily may decrease your risk of developing heart failure by 46 percent. The new study from Sweden was published in the American Heart Association's Circulation: Heart Failure. The study, which began in 1997 and involved 39,805 participants ages 20 to 90 years old, found that the more active a person is, the lower that person's risk for heart failure. Physical activity helped both men and women reduce their risk of heart failure. According to the American Heart Association, an estimated 5.7 million people in the U.S.have congestive heart failure. Around half of those diagnosed with heart failure will die within five years of the diagnosis.
