Boosts Sleep Time by 90 Minutes

1 Tasty New Insomnia Cure: Cherry Juice

Senior citizens who suffer from insomnia have been cautioned about taking sleeping pills, which have been shown to raise the risk of falling by 400 percent, but researchers at Louisiana State University have discovered a much safer, and far tastier, means to induce sleep: tart cherry juice. Insomniac volunteers who drank eight ounces of tart Montmorency cherry juice twice a day for two weeks and were monitored in a sleep lab experienced an increase in their average sleep time of nearly ninety minutes per night, and reported improvement in the quality of their sleep each night. Scientists credited the cherry juice's combination of melatonin and tryptophan with the beneficial effects, and recommend insomniacs drink a glass each morning and evening.

Not So Innocent Secondhand Smoke

2 E-Cigs Have Toxic Metal Emissions

Secondhand smoke from electronic cigarettes contains chromium, a toxic element which isn't present in regular cigarettes, finds a study from the University of Southern California. The study also found that e-cigarette smoke contains four times more nickel than traditional cigarettes. E-cigarette smoke also contains other toxic metals like lead and zinc, but at lower levels than contained in cigarettes. "The metal particles likely come from the cartridge of the e-cigarette devices themselves – which opens up the possibility that better manufacturing standards for the devices could reduce the quantity of metals in the smoke," said Arian Saffari, PhD student and lead author of the study. The study was published in Journal of Environmental Science, Processes and Impacts.

Senior Athletes Age Well

3 Exercise Can Delay Effects of Aging

Exercise may really be a fountain of youth for bone and joint health. New research on senior athletes suggests that comprehensive fitness and nutrition routines can help to maintain overall physical health and minimize decline in bone and joint health. The research, published in Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (JAAOS), found that being physically active can delay or minimize the effects of aging, and significantly improve musculoskeletal health, as well as overall health. The research involved senior athletes ages 65 and up. "A lot of the deterioration we see with aging can be attributed to a more sedentary lifestyle instead of aging itself," noted lead study author and orthopaedic surgeon Bryan G. Vopat, MD.
