5 Minutes Could Mean 3 Years

1 Even Brief Daily Runs Extend Lifespans

Give me 5 minutes a day and I'll add 3 years to your life. That's the essence of a study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology which followed the health records of 55,000 adults ages 18 to 100 over 15 years and found that those who ran even a little bit each day lived that much longer on average than non-runners, and were 30 percent less likely to die of any cause. Most striking was the finding that this health advantage was about the same for those who ran as little as 5 minutes daily at a leisurely piece as it was for those who followed conventional health guidelines and engaged in 30 minutes of moderate or 15 minutes of vigorous exercise almost every day. Even runners who were overweight or smoked were less likely to die prematurely than non-runners.

Surgeon General Calls for Action

2 Skin Cancer Is on the Rise

Skin cancers, including melanoma, are on the rise and this week, acting surgeon general, Dr. Boris D. Lushniak, said in a report that Americans need to do more to lower their risk. Over the past 3 decades, skin cancer cases have grown more than those of all other cancers combined. Each year, nearly 5 million Americans are treated for skin cancer and about 9,000 die from melanoma. The report said that tanning bed use contributes to several hundred thousand cases of skin cancer each year and will require black-box warnings on tanning beds, cautioning against their use by anyone under age 18. The Indoor Tanning Association fought back saying there was “no consensus” among researchers on a link between melanoma and exposure to UV light either from tanning beds or the sun

CDC Urges Caution

3 Ebola Outbreak Could Spread to U.S.

An Ebola outbreak in West Africa that killed at least 672 people could spread to the U.S., say health officials. Symptoms of the disease which include, fever, red eyes and bleeding, can take up to 3 weeks to appear, so it’s possible that an infected yet asymptomatic person can travel outside West Africa. “But we have protections in place,” says John. O’Connor, Centers for Disease Control. Airline workers are trained to recognize symptoms and quarantine officers are located at 20 U.S. airports ready to respond to an in-flight illness. To date, the World Health Organization has not imposed travel restrictions saying it’s “highly unlikely” for Ebola to be spread by plane. The CDC still urges travelers to avoid contact with people who may be infected and to seek medical attention for symptoms.

Crackdown on Mini Chocolate Cake

4 South Koreans Send Choco Pies to North Korea

North Korea is desperate to keep out the Choco Pie, a pesky mini chocolate-coated cake filled with marshmallow! Seen as a symbol of capitalism and the prosperity of South Korea, Choco Pies, produced by Orion in South Korea, are the target of a North Korean crackdown. The Guardian reports today that South Korean activists released 50 helium balloons filled with 10,000 Choco Pies and anti-Pyongyang leaflets. The Choco Pie balloon launch took place near the North Korea border, so perhaps there are some very excited North Koreans right now. It's believed that millions of Choco Pies are traded each month on the black market in North Korea.

Filet-O-Fish Targeted

5 Russian Agency Files McDonald's Lawsuit

Rospotrebnadzor, the Russian federal consumer protection agency, filed a lawsuit against McDonald's for misrepresenting the calorie count of their Filet-O-Fish sandwiches and Royale Burgers, as well as their chicken burgers and cheeseburgers. The lawsuit seeks to ban the sell of certain menu items considered substandard after findings from a study in the Novgorod region. According to Rospotrebnadzor, the calorie count of some menu items is "two to three times" what McDonald's specifies. The agency says that for milkshakes and ice cream products, McDonald's reports around half of the actual fat, carbohydrate and protein content. The agency's report states that harmful bacteria were discovered in the Vegetable Salad and Caesar Roll. Court proceedings begin in August.

Vertical Food Will Wow Them

6 Red Lobster to Serve Food They're Proud Of

Red Lobster, purchased this week by Golden Gate Capital, is hoping to turn things around by getting rid of deals like two entrees for $25. Red Lobster communications director Erica Ettori said that the foods developed for a price point weren't as great an idea as developing foods that guests would crave. Ettori noted that guests won't see Red Lobster boxed into a discount that causes them to serve food they're not proud to serve. CNN Money also noted that Red Lobster is hoping that presenting food on the plate in a more vertical (upscale) manner may help boost sales. No worries though: Endless Shrimp and Lobsterfest will continue.
