1 Diet Beverages Aid Weight Loss After All

A few less structured studies of diet soda have suggested that drinking it may actually produce weight gain, not loss, but a new randomized trial of just over 300 people indicates just the opposite. The University of Colorado study, which was admittedly paid for by the American Beverage Association but was vetted for publication this month by the journal Obesity, found that of volunteers placed on a 12-week diet, the half that drank 24 ounces of artificially sweetened beverages per day lost 14.2 pounds while those who consumed that amount of water lost just ten. Researchers, who controlled for sex, age, initial weight, blood pressure and ethnicity, offered as a possible explanation for the weight-loss difference the fewer feelings of hunger reported by the diet drink group.

“Alarming” Rise Says CDC

2 Diabetes Cases Are Up Again

More than 29 million American adults have diabetes, up from 26 million in 2010 according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control. The new statistics mean that more than 9% of the population has diabetes and, what’s more, about a quarter of the population doesn’t even know it. The CDC estimates that another 86 million adults are pre-diabetic. These estimates are based on a national sample of Americans who gave blood samples and were asked if they’d been diagnosed with diabetes. The organization does not ask about the type of diabetes but estimates that the vast majority have type 2, which is often caused by poor eating and exercise habits. A CDC spokesperson says that these numbers “underscore the need for an increased focus on reducing the burden of diabetes” in the U.S.

Less Guilt, More Microbes

3 White Bread Boosts Gut Microbes

White bread may encourage beneficial gut bacteria, say scientists. Reported in the American Chemical Society (ACS) Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, the findings show that consumption of white bread helped boost the presence of a group of beneficial bacteria known as Lactobacillus. The study involved 38 healthy adults who answered questions about their diets and offered stool samples. While the study aimed to look for the effects of pectin, which is found in citrus fruits, the scientists noted that their most novel finding was the helpful effect of white bread. Pectin was found to lower levels of some beneficial gut bacteria.
