Aussies Now the 4th Fattest

1 Folks Down under Are Plumping Up

While Australians enjoy an image as a lean, healthy, outdoorsy people, the Ozzies' obesity rates have been rising even as those in other developed countries have begun leveling off, with the result that Australia is now the fourth fattest advanced nation on earth, behind the U.S., Mexico and New Zealand. Over 28 percent of its citizens now rank as obese, an increase from 21.7 percent in 2000, and the State of Victoria Department of Human Resources has predicted that unless trends are reversed, 83 percent of men and 75 percent of women will be overweight or obese by 2025. Health experts place the blame on the usual culprits: growing affluence, a car-oriented culture, increasingly sedentary leisure activities, and a trending preference for cheap and convenient high-calorie junk food.

2 Warning Labels Proposed for CA Soda Bottles

A bill introduced in California proposes that sodas and other sugary drinks sold in the state be required to carry warning labels for diabetes, obesity and tooth decay. If passed, the proposal, sponsored by State Senator Bill Monning, would make CA the first state to carry such warnings on soda bottles. The Centers for Disease Control indicate that more than a third of all U.S. adults and 17% of children, ages 2-19, are obese and there’s a growing national movement to curb consumption of sugary drinks which medical experts say are largely to blame for the epidemic of childhood obesity. The American Beverage Assn. said it’s misleading to suggest that soft drink consumption is uniquely responsible for obesity. Sodas and junk food have been banned from CA public schools since 2005.

3 Kit Kat Named Most Influential Candy Bar Ever

Can a candy bar be influential? Yes, candy bars influence other candy bars, and, of course, they can influence weight gain too. Time recently named the most influential candy bars of all time, and Kit Kat was named the biggest influencer. It was the first bar to be "marketed around sharing," and the first to go global, says Time. Named second is Hershey's Milk Chocolate bar. Hershey's is credited with helping milk chocolate go mainstream with Milton Hershey's distribution network that focused on local milk for production volume. In third on the list is Toblerone, the first bar to include a filling! Other bars named include Nestlé Milk Chocolate, Snickers, Chicken Dinner, Grenada Chocolate, Scharffen Berger, Cadbury Milk Chocolate, Nestlé Crunch, Baby Ruth, Milky Way and Wonka Bar.
