Fast Walkers Outlive Slow Ones

1 Rapid-Paced Walking Is the Healthiest Kind

Long-term data covering 39,000 middle-aged Americans who walk regularly for health reveals that the faster the pace, the greater the benefits, especially for longevity. Walkers who took more than 24 minutes to cover a mile were 18 percent more likely to have died from any cause than those who walked faster, and 44 percent more likely than those who took less than 13.5 minutes per mile. Also, the death rate for the slowest walkers was the same even if they covered the same distance as the fast walkers. This finding contradicts the assumption that total energy burn -- whether from a fast pace of short duration or a slow pace of longer duration -- is all that matters for health benefits. A fast pace, it seems, has significant advantages in lowering one's odds of premature death.

2 Vitamin D May Not Fight Diseases As Thought

While previous observational studies have suggested that high vitamin D can reduce risk of cardiovascular events, colorectal cancer and diabetes, the benefit isn’t clear in clinical trials. French researchers found that clinical trial results showed no reduction in disease risk when vitamin D supplements were taken. Even those who had low vitamin D levels before taking the supplements had no reduction in risk. Researchers didn’t look at the benefits of vitamin D for bone health, and they say that more clinical trials are needed. The study was published in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology.
