1 How Poverty Leads to Unhealthy Food Choices

Low-income groups may make poor food choices, leading to overweight, not just because fattening foods are cheap, but because poverty causes people to make poor choices in general. Studies conducted by a team of scientists at schools ranging from Harvard and Princeton to England's University of Warwick have found that the simple mental strain of being poor lowers what researchers call a person's "mental bandwidth" and reduces their cognitive function by the equivalent of 13 IQ points, like living every day as it if came after a sleepless night. "You are captured by these monetary issues -- how to pay rent, how to pay bills. As a result, you neglect other problems in life that deserve your attention," said one study co-author. Problems such as an increasing and unhealthy weight gain.

2 Exercise Intensity Matters More Than Duration

Exercise intensity matters more than duration for preventing weight gain, find researchers from the University of Utah. Published in American Journal of Health Promotion, the new research reveals that brief periods of intense physical activity can have just as positive an effect on weight as 10 minutes of exercise at a time. Whether the higher-intensity exercise lasted for less or more than 10 minutes, it was still associated with a lower risk for obesity. Researchers say the research findings are significant given that fewer than 5 percent of Americans exercise for the recommended length of time. Currently, Americans are advised to get 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity each week, and that can be accumulated in 10-minute periods.

Obese Can Control Like Slim

3 Overweight Women Can Learn Impulse Control

Delayed gratification, or willpower, can be taught through behavioral interventions, says an obesity expert and researcher. While previous studies have shown that overweight and obese people have trouble delaying gratification, obesity expert Leonard H. Epstein, PhD, believes that obese women can be taught to delay that immediate reward, such as dessert, in favor of a bigger reward later: a slimmer figure. The research, published in Appetite, found that behavioral interventions that teach impulse control work just as well in overweight and obese women as they do for slim women. Epstein says it's possible to teach women to "mentally simulate the future in order to moderate their behavior in the present."
