Quitters Still Get Lung Cancer

1 Former Heavy Smokers Urged to Get CT Scans

Lung cancer remains the third-most commonly diagnosed form of the disease, and still one of the deadliest: its average survival rate, 15 percent of patients alive after five years, hasn't increased over time even with expanded research. Since a greater proportion of lung cancer patients are actually former smokers rather than current smokers -- 45 percent compared to 40 percent respectively -- New England Journal of Medicine researchers now recommend lung CT scans for individuals with a "heavy smoker" background in their past, defined as someone with a history of having smoked for 30 "pack years." That designation corresponds to smoking one pack (20 cigarettes) per day for 30 years, or two packs per day for fifteen years, and so on. Experts recommend CT scans using low-dose radiation.

2 Since 1984, Today Is National Ice Cream Day

President Ronald Reagan proclaimed July as National Ice Cream Month, and specified that the third Sunday in July would be known as National Ice Cream Day. This year, National Ice Cream Day is July 21. That's today! Since 1984, some Americans have used the day as an excuse to indulge in the frozen treat, but it seems that little excuse is needed. According to the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA), about 90 percent of the population enjoys ice cream. IDFA also says that about 9 percent of the milk that comes from dairy farmers in the U.S. is used to make ice cream. Take-home ice cream sales account for the biggest section of the ice cream market with revenues of about $6.8 billion in 2010. Are you having ice cream today?

3 Exercise Reorganizes Brain to Handle Stress

Exercise actually reorganizes the brain to have a reduced response to anxiety and stress, find Princeton University researchers. Physical activity also makes the brain more resilient, meaning that stress and anxiety are less likely to interfere with normal functions of the brain. In the study, mice that had just exercised were exposed to cold water, a stressor. The brains of the mice showed a spike in the activity of neurons responsible for shutting down excitement within the ventral hippocampus, an area of the brain that regulates anxiety. "Understanding how the brain regulates anxious behavior gives us potential clues about helping people with anxiety disorders," notes Elizabeth Gould, Dorman T. Warren Professor of Psychology. The research was published in Journal of Neuroscience.

4 Bedtime Snacking Isn't All Bad

Bedtime snacking may be a complicated ritual, with some foods disturbing sleep, while other foods promote sleep. Eating after 8 p.m. has been tied with obesity, but certain late-night snacks may be fine. According to an article in Wall Street Journal (Is bedtime snacking bad?), some foods interfere with sleep, while others can aid in getting better sleep. The foods to avoid before bedtime include processed meats, soy sauce and aged cheeses, as well as high-fat or high-protein snacks. However, when eaten in small amounts of under 200 calories, foods high in magnesium, potassium and calcium may aid sleep and not cause weight gain. Some examples include nonfat milk with or without honey, unprocessed turkey, bananas, almonds and low-fat yogurt.
