1 Americans Finally Cutting Sugar Intake

All the health warnings may be working. Both adults and children in the U.S. are eating considerably fewer sugary food items than they did fifteen years ago. According to researchers at the NPD Group, which specializes in collecting data for the food industry, the average kid ate or drank some common sugar-sweetened item 126 fewer times in 2012 than in 1998, which includes 62 fewer soft drinks and 22 fewer servings of sugary breakfast cereal. Fruit drinks and juices also saw a serious decline among young people. The trend was similar but less marked among adults, who ate sugary sweets on 49 fewer occasions in 2012. The only sweetened items to maintain or increase their consumption rate were fruit snacks and yogurt. Children continue to consume 14 percent more sweets than adults.

2 Americans' Vitamin D Levels Fluctuate Monthly

Scientists have pinpointed vitamin D seasonality which may lead to a better understanding of its role in disease prevention. Americans’ vitamin D levels are highest in August and lowest in February say UC Irvine and Mayo Clinic researchers. "Our analysis, combined with other data, will help contribute to understanding the role of vitamin D in all seasonal diseases, where the simple winter/spring/summer/fall categories are not sufficient," says study first author Amy Kasahara. Vitamin D, which is produced in the skin upon exposure to the sun’s UVB rays, is essential for bone health and is thought to improve the body’s immune system. Besides sun exposure, vitamin D is found in some foods, including egg yolks, salon and sardines. Milk and cereals are also often fortified with it.
