1 Champagne Could Strengthen Your Memory

Champagne in small doses, two to three glasses per week, might help slow or forestall the gradual degradation of the memory that typically precedes dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Experiments at Reading University found that lab animals whose food had been dosed with champagne for six weeks recorded a 40 percent higher success rate on spatial memory tests than teetotaling animals. Moreover, biopsies found that the level of certain proteins crucial to memory had increased by 200 percent in the dosed animals. Researchers attribute the cognitive benefits to phenolic acid, a compound found in the black grapes crushed to make champagne, and suggest that anyone over age 40 might draw benefits from a few glasses a week, but acknowledge that much more research needs to be done.

2 Exercise Ball Chairs Provide No Benefit

The notion that sitting on a large exercise ball instead of an office chair can improve one's midsection muscle tone and posture has been growing in credibility, but new research indicates that it is apparently pure fiction. Studies at Canada’s Waterloo University that had volunteers sit alternatively on office chairs, exercise balls and backless stools found no significant difference in the measured muscle activity in their stomachs or lower backs as a result. In addition, it was determined that people slumped in their seats regardless of the seating mode and experienced no difference in back pain. It is true that sitting on a ball burns a few more calories per hour, but any health benefits are offset by the increased likelihood of toppling over while reaching for something.
