1 Weight-Loss Bike Program Bans Overweights

As part of its program to improve the public's health, New York City has become the latest city to begin a bike-share program for residents to pick up a bicycle at one location and return it later there or elsewhere. However, although cycling is an ideal weight-loss activity, the bike manufacturer has set a 260-pound weight limit on prospective bike-share members. The weight requirement is also in effect in bike-share programs in Boston, Washington, D.C., and Portland, Oregon. New Yorkers must sign a contract stating their compliance with the weight limit, but NYC transportation officials indicate that they will allow riders to sign up or not as they choose, since many fit athletes weigh over 260, and because most people too obese to fit on a bike are aware of the fact.

2 Prescribing Exercise for Depression

Do 3 sets of 8 reps and call me in the morning, may be the new prescription for patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), says a report in the Journal of Psychiatric Practice. Therapists have long known that exercise is an effective treatment for MDD, and now new data provides specific guidelines on how to prescribe it for patients. The data indicates that 3 to 5 sessions of aerobic exercise, lasting 45 to 60 minutes each, is the preferred method of treatment although strength training that includes a variety of upper and lower body exercises with 3 sets of 8 repetitions for each exercise, also had positive results. Researchers say that, even if the patient works below these guidelines, clinicians should encourage exercise since it is still beneficial for patients with MDD.
