Blame Chemicals, Not Fats

1 How Red Meat Raises Your Heart Attack Risk

Cleveland Clinic research indicates that the link between red meat consumption and heart disease is not primarily the fat and cholesterol, but creatine, a substance in red meat that certain bacteria in the intestines metabolize into a chemical called TMAO, which in high blood concentrations is a predictor of heart attacks. The TMAO levels spike in the blood of regular meat eaters after consuming red meat, but there is virtually no production of TMAO in vegans or vegetarians after an identical meal, indicating the absence of the key bacteria in meat-avoiders' gut. How TMAO increases heart attack risk is unclear, but until medical science can isolate and produce an antibiotic to remove the key bacteria, researchers recommend caution and moderation in red meat consumption.

Tying Tourniquets

2 Ancient Measure Used to Save Lives in Boston

The use of tourniquets to stem blood loss is as old as the Roman Empire, but had become controversial in the last few decades with many military surgeons thinking they cut off blood and oxygen to limbs, resulting in amputations. But in the seconds following the Boston Marathon bombings, people used shirts, belts and other materials to tie off bleeding limbs of victims, acts which, doctors at area hospitals say, may have saved many lives. Skepticism about the use of tourniquets resulted from improper placement too high above the injury where they could damage healthy tissue. But recent studies showed that tourniquets save lives and could raise survival rates as high as 90%. Three spectators died, 13 people lost one or more limbs and at least 170 people were injured in Monday’s bombings.
