Due to Parents’ Safety Concerns

1 Fewer Girls Getting HPV Vaccine

Despite evidence that the HPV vaccine, which protects against the virus that causes cervical and other cancers, has few side effects, fewer teenage girls are getting it due to parents’ growing safety concerns finds research from the U of Colorado. The CDC recommends that both boys and girls receive three HPV shots as preteens but research based on a national immunization survey of almost 100,000 parents indicates that, in 2010, about 3/4 of girls ages 13-17 were not up to date on their HPV vaccines and the percentage of parents who said they didn’t plan to vaccinate their daughters rose from 40 to 44%. "These are wonderful vaccines preventing severe diseases," wrote lead researcher Dr. Paul Darden. "HPV is the first vaccine that will prevent cancer, which is a tremendous health benefit."

Leave Snacks in Kitchen

2 Distracted Diners Consume More Calories

Eating snacks or meals while reading, playing games or viewing television may lead to consuming more calories per sitting, say researchers in the UK. Distracted eating later in the day may be even worse than eating earlier, finds the review of 24 previous studies published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Researchers from the University of Liverpool found that with distracted eating, the amount of food eaten could rise by up to 50 percent. On average, distracted eaters consumed 10 percent more food, and also ate more than 25 percent more food at later meals. Distracted eating was defined as not paying close attention to the food that is consumed, and not being as aware of the amount of food eaten.

Seattle's Best, Not So Much

3 Starbucks Medium Roast Packs in Caffeine

Starbucks medium roast has the highest caffeine content of major coffee brands tested in a series called "Caffeinated Nation" on the television show "Today." The 12-ounce medium roast from Starbucks contains 250 milligrams of caffeine, while Seattle's Best has only 125 milligrams for a 12-ounce size. In the middle are Dunkin Donuts (12 ounces) and McDonald's (10 ounces) with around 165 milligrams of caffeine. Nutritionist Monica Reingel, who wrote Nutrition Diva's Secrets for a Healthy Diet, told "Today" that caffeine may be consumed safely by most people as long as they keep the daily intake under 500 milligrams, the equivalent of two 12-ounce cups of Starbucks!

Scouts Sold 1,000 Boxes Hourly

4 Pranked Girl Scouts Get Last Word

Girl Scouts in Oregon were pranked by a large corporate order for 6,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies. The order, worth $24,000, was the result of a hoax by a co-worker of a troop parent. However, cookie lovers in Portland showed up at the Girl Scout offices to buy the cookies at the rate of about 1,000 boxes per hour! Hundreds of people waited patiently in line to buy the cookies, reports KATU. The troops sold 3,000 boxes, and plan on selling the rest of the extra cookies at their next sale on Saturday. The woman who pulled the prank apologized to the Girl Scouts and won't face charges.
