1 Sex Burns Far Fewer Calories Than Believed

The traditional notion that engaging in sex burns several hundred calories has been dramatically downsized by University of Alabama biostatistician David Allison, whose research into the matter found that the average duration of sexual activity is only about six minutes, and the typical energy burn is no more than 21 calories, making sex the caloric equal of a brief walk in the park, although hopefully more enjoyable. Of course, as it is with most forms of exercise, the energy burn probably increases with added reps. Allison's study, which appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, also found that P.E. classes are too brief and low-key to help kids lose weight, and that skipping breakfast and/or snacking don’t necessarily cause obesity, but after the news about sex, who cares?

2 Get Your Protein from Food, Not Bars

People should get their protein from food, and not from bars and shakes, say experts who add that non-food sources may be high in sugar and calories and don’t leave people feeling full. According to the Centers for Disease Control, about 10-35% of daily calories should come from protein. Women should eat about 46 grams of protein/day; men should eat 56 grams. A recent US food survey found that, on average, women consume about 70 grams and men eat about 100 grams. Yogurt is a good source of protein, as are lean meats, poultry, fish and legumes say experts who add that people should space out their protein consumption throughout the day, eating equal amounts at each meal. People with high-caloric needs may benefit from high-protein products including bars, shakes and supplementation.
