1 “New Year’s Resolutions” Likely to Succeed

Of note for persons hoping to lose weight or become more physically fit in 2013, University of Scranton researchers found that making your goal a specific New Year's resolution increases your chances of success. Of those who resolve to achieve a goal on January first, 36 percent have failed to stick with it by the end of January, but those who remain tend to hang in there, with 50 percent still on track as of April 1, and 46 percent holding firm on July 1. By comparison, of those who set similar goals but do not make them formal New Year's resolutions, fully 83 percent had failed to maintain them by the end of January, and only four percent were still with the program on July 1. Losing weight, following an exercise program and quitting smoking are the three most common resolutions.

Meningitis Outbreak Killed 39

2 Cleaners Also to Blame for Deaths, Says NECC

The New England Compounding Center says its cleaning contractor, UniFirst Corp., should share blame for 39 US deaths and 656 cases of meningitis contracted from tainted steroid injections. NECC’s claims are “without merit,” says UniFirst, acknowledging that it provided once a month cleaning services. NECC filed for bankruptcy last month and is seeking to establish a fund to compensate affected individuals and their families. The FDA and CDC identified bacterial and/or fungal contamination in some of NECC’s products and several health agencies found “visible black particulate matter” later identified as fungus. Federal authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the company’s practices and local authorities have voted to permanently revoke NECC’s license to operate.

Activity and Diet Are Key

3 Walking Can Lower a Womans Stroke Risk

Data from more than 30,000 participants in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition study from Spain indicates that women who walk at least three and a half hours per week can lower the risk of stroke. A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is suddenly interrupted or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, someone in the United States has a stroke every 40 seconds. Every four minutes someone dies of stroke. Daily physical exercise is one way women can lower this risk with walking being one of the most popular activities. Other ways to lower stroke risk include dietary measures such as lowering sodium intake and reducing fat consumption.
