The Fat & the fit: not a match

1 Fitness Center Opens for Obese People Only

Given the reality that many obese people, those who are most in need of physical exercise, are uncomfortable working out in fitness centers amid lean and fit people, a Dallas gym called Downsize Fitness has instituted a fat-people-only policy. The gym is available only to the obese, persons who are at least fifty pounds over a healthy weight. Applicants must get on the gym scale to establish their qualifications for acceptance, but once inside will be rewarded for this minor indignity with a facility that features exercise equipment designed and sized for the extra large, as well as an absence of mirrors, and windows frosted for privacy. Dallas has one of the country's largest number of obese individuals. Downsize Fitness is just the third obese-only gym in the U.S.

Explains Patients’ Mental Fog

2 Research Finds Cause of "Chemo Brain”

Researchers have finally found a physiological explanation for the phenomenon known as "chemo brain," a condition that cancer patients who receive chemotherapy have commonly complained about for decades and which they describe as "a loss of coping skills" or "being in a mental fog" while undergoing cancer treatments. Up to now, MRIs and other analyses have failed to detect any physical changes that would explain these side-effects, but new tests using sophisticated tomography methods have found significant changes in the brain's metabolism after chemotherapy, specifically a reduction in energy use and function in certain areas of the brain responsible for planning and prioritizing, which can negatively affect memory and concentration. In short, chemo brain is not just a mental state.

Air Is Safe, Say Experts

3 Train Accident Spills Toxic Chemicals

A New Jersey bridge failure caused a freight train derailment resulting in the spill of highly toxic and flammable vinyl chloride into the Mantua Creek near the Delaware River. Four of the six cars involved in the crash were carrying the chemical and resulted in area schools being placed on lockdown and some local evacuations. Eighteen people with respiratory issues were taken to a local hospital. Officials say the air surrounding the wreck is being monitored and is safe. Vinyl chloride is used to make plastic and vinyl products and has been labeled a Group A human carcinogen, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The Coast Guard has been dispatched to the scene to begin the delicate cleanup of the remaining overturned railroad cars.

Changing the Psychological Bible

4 Asperger's Syndrome May Be Going Away

No, people with Asperger's Syndrome won't suddenly wake up cured, but the diagnosis may be eliminated from the upcoming fifth edition of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5). Changes to the DSM-5 will be voted on by 20 people this weekend. NPR reports that patients who were once diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome may now be diagnosed as mildly autistic. However, people with Asperger's don't necessarily want to be lumped in with autism spectrum disorder. Another proposed change to the DSM-5 is the addition of a new childhood disorder to be called disruptive mood dysregulation disorder. The new diagnosis is aimed at lowering the number of kids who are diagnosed as bipolar. The hope is that fewer kids will be prescribed anti-psychotic drugs.

A Christmas Miracle

5 Mistletoe May Benefit Colon Cancer Patients

Mistletoe may have potential as an alternative therapy for sufferers of colon cancer. Researchers with the University of Adelaide in Australia have found that one type of mistletoe extract, from a species known as Fraxini, was highly effective against colon cancer cells in a laboratory culture and gentler on healthy intestinal cells as compared with chemotherapy. Chemotherapy alternatives are often sought due to harsh side effects such as mouth ulcers and hair loss. Fraxini mistletoe grows on ash trees and its extract has been considered a viable alternative therapy in overseas countries, states Zahra Lotfollahi, the project research lead. Colon cancer is the second greatest cause of cancer death in the Western World.

Nutritionally Inadequate

6 US Diets Still Fall Short of Guidelines

Americans are still falling short when it comes to achieving their nutritional goals. Researchers with the USDA’s Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP) studied the responses of more than 8,000 Americans to a survey that collected data of what they ate in the course of a typical day. Overall, most Americans did not reach all of the nutrition recommendations set forth by the USDA, but some groups fared better than others. Children and elderly adults scored highest, indicating they more often ate a healthier diet than young and middle-aged adults. Hispanic Americans typically had better quality diets than either blacks or whites. The one tip that would help boost nutrition levels among all groups, says lead researcher Gary Bennett, is to eat more fruits and vegetables.

Other Factors More of a Risk

7 HPV Linked to Increased Laryngeal Cancer Risk

A retrospective analysis of 55 studies found that HPV was present in laryngeal cancer tissue of 28 percent of participants, translating into a five times higher risk of developing it compared to those who test negative. But the overall risk was still low considering approximately 50 percent of people who are sexually active are infected at some point and the rates of infection in the cancerous tissues varied widely from study to study. Doctors say bigger risk factors are heavy drinking and/or smoking which is typically part of the profile of someone with laryngeal cancer. While doctors cannot say how many laryngeal cancers are possibly caused by HPV, they believe vaccinating boys and men against the virus would help in reducing the risk.
