Find My Wife!

1 Little Brother May Raise Blood Pressure

Having a younger brother may mean you're more likely to have higher blood pressure into adulthood, claim researchers who studied 374 Bolivian adults living in villages in the Amazon. And it's no wonder. MSNBC reports that older brothers in the area must help younger brothers find jobs and even a girlfriend or wife! Published in Economics and Human Biology, the study found that adults with younger brothers had blood pressure readings up to 6 percent higher. Younger sisters also affected blood pressure among older girls, but only by an increase of 3.8 percent for each younger sister. While the findings are correlational, younger siblings may be bad news for health for those living in the Amazon! However, a 1991 study found that having siblings in rich countries can lower blood pressure.

British Shopping Centre Hilarity

2 Santa Stuck at Beard While Rappelling

Santa needed some assistance after his beard became stuck while rappelling at the Reading shopping centre in the UK. Santa dangled from the ceiling for about 30 minutes during the Christmas lights switch-on show. He was 15 feet from the floor at the Broad Street Mall Saturday afternoon during the incident, and could have freed himself by taking off his beard. However, Santa didn't want to disappoint the kids. Some shoppers thought the whole thing was the "funniest thing ever," while other shoppers were "absolutely mortified," says eyewitness Ryan Gaudreau, as reported by BBC. Ryan noted that the centre usually empties after the show, but many shoppers hung around to make sure Father Christmas would make it down. Good news for the kids, Santa has returned to earth.

3 Le Whif: Breathable Chocolate in Tube

Are you ready to breathe your chocolate with Le Whif? Makers of the breathable coffee and vitamins are betting that you also want to breathe in your chocolate while chatting with friends over coffee. Let's dissect this stuff a bit. Le Whif breathable chocolate is a "purely organic chocolate powder that you breathe into your mouth," explains the manufacturer's website, LeWhif.com. It comes in a "lipstick-like device." NPR jokingly gave a verdict for Le Whif breathable chocolate in the form of a Surgeon General's warning: "I don't know if these will harm your health or anything, but they're kind of gross."

Get Ready for Tea Bars

4 Starbucks Buys Teavana

Starbucks is going to pay $620 million for Teavana Holdings Inc. Teavana currently has 300 locations in shopping malls, but Starbucks wants to expand the popular Teavana chain into stand-alone stores around the world, complete with tea bars where customers can purchase cold or hot drinks. Currently, Teavana offers high-end loose leaf teas. It's believed that the purchase will help position Starbucks for more robust sales in parts of the world where people like tea better than coffee. It seems that Starbucks really is crazy about tea. In 1999, Starbucks purchased Tazo tea, a bagged tea available in stores. And Starbucks just opened their first Tazo tea shop!

Arginine and Proline

5 Diet Essential for Wound Healing in Diabetes

Chronic wounds such as foot ulcers are a common problem for patients with diabetes and are the cause of more than 80 percent of leg amputations in this population. Diet plays a major role in helping to prevent and heal these types of wounds. French researchers have found that a high protein diet, particularly one rich in two specific amino acids, may improve wound healing in diabetic laboratory animals. Researchers found that rats given a high protein diet supplemented with arginine and proline had better nitrogen balance than those on a standard diet plus showed more new blood vessel growth – which is an essential part of wound healing. The amino acid supplemented diet also reduced inflammation which slows the healing process. Dairy products are especially rich in both amino acids.

What Went Wrong?

6 No Major Change in FDA Pharmacy Oversight Yet

A Republican-controlled congressional panel has given the Food and Drug Administration until the end of November to put documentation together showing their role in overseeing The New England Compounding Center (NECC) before agreeing to new regulations. The NECC shipped out a contaminated steroid that led to an outbreak of fungal meningitis that has made about 500 people sick and killed more than 30. Investigators found poor conditions in room that should have been sterile to make the preservative free drug. Compounding pharmacies have fought hard to leave regulation up to the state, but some argue this will happen again if nothing changes. Both parties in the Democratic-controlled Senate are willing to pass rules that could significantly change how these pharmacies are regulated.
