30 Minutes Daily Seems Optimal

1 Too Much Exercise May Impede Weight Loss

A University of Copenhagen study of slightly overweight, sedentary men found that there may be an optimal amount of exercise for weight loss, with more exercise being unproductive or even counterproductive. One group, which worked out daily until they burned 300 calories, about 30 minutes, lost an average of 7 pounds after 13 weeks, 83 percent more than expected, but another group, which worked out until they burned 600 calories, about an hour per day, only lost 5 pounds, or 20 percent less than expected. Food and activity diaries revealed that the 600-calorie group seemed more fatigued and hungry, eating larger meal and more snacks and spending more time sitting when not exercising, while the 300-calorie group seemed more energized and less famished as a result of their workouts.

2 Menstrual Cycle Effects Asthma Symptoms

A Norwegian study of 4,000 women has found that women’s menstrual cycles significantly influence the severity of respiratory symptoms such as asthma and smoker's cough, with the symptoms at their worst when nearing ovulation. Specifically, wheezing grew worse between days 10 and 22 of the cycle while shortness of breath was most intense on days 7 to 21, with both symptoms easing off slightly at ovulation. Coughing was at its worst shortly after ovulation for smokers, asthmatics and the overweight. The fluctuation in symptoms was attributed to variation in hormone production and body temperature during the cycle, which in turn might effect airways and inflammation due to infection. Experts suggest that asthma medication for women may need to be adjusted during the menstrual cycle.
