Water Balz

1 Expanding Toy Poses Risk to Kids, Pets

Water Balz, a colorful expanding toy ball, poses a health risk if swallowed by children and pets. The toy, initially about the size of a marble, is made of a highly absorbent polymer that expands to the size of a racquet ball when placed in water - or when swallowed, according to a report in the journal Pediatrics. The report, by pediatric surgeon Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye documented the case of an infant who swallowed the toy and had to have surgery to extricate it from her digestive tract. The manufacturer, DuneCraft Inc., says the balls are not meant for children younger than 4. But, says Olutoye, that may not stop young children from getting their hands on them. A similar materials is used in gardening and there have been reports of birds suffering fatal obstructions after ingesting them.

2 FDA Warns Against Use of Anti-Diarrhea Drug

The Food and Drug Administration issued a warning against the use of an anti-diarrhea drug called Intestinomicina. Manufactured in El Salvador, Intestinomicina contains chloramphenicol, an ingredient which can interfere with the production of blood cells making Intestinomicina potentially dangerous to people with anemia and other low blood cell counts. The FDA recalled all forms of chloramphenicol in July of this year. Intestinomicina comes in pill and liquid form and is sold as a treatment for infectious diarrhea. It’s commonly sold at international grocery stores and specialty stores in the US. The FDA warns consumers who purchased the product to stop using it and to consult a health care professional.

Without Complications

3 Mom-to-Daughter Uterus Transplants Performed

Swedish doctors performed the first mother to daughter uterus transplants on two separate women, both in their 30s. One woman had her uterus removed due to cervical cancer; the other was born without a uterus. "We are not going to call it a complete success until this results in children," said Michael Olausson, one of the surgeons who explained that it doesn’t matter if the donor is in menopause. The women will have to take anti-rejection drugs for a year after which, if they are considered stable, doctors will continue the in vitro fertilization process they began prior to surgery. Experts say the chances of pregnancy may be lower than normal. The donated uterus may not contain all the blood vessels it originally had, possibly compromising the health of the developing baby.

Missing Link in Obesity PUzzle?

4 BPA Could Be Making Kids Fat

BPA (bisphenol A), which is found in food containers and plastic bottles, could be making children more plump, suggest researchers. The BPA study, involving almost 3,000 kids and teens, found that those with the highest BPA levels in their urine were 2.6 times more likely to experience obesity than kids or teens with low levels of BPA. The link held even for kids who consumed the correct amount of calories. The researchers say that while diet and physical activity contribute to increased fat mass, there's more to the story. Yet, the link between BPA and increased fat was statistically significant only for adolescents and white children, not young black or Hispanic kids. The research was published in Journal of the American Medical Association.

2030 Is Looking Big

5 Obesity May Exceed 60 Percent in 13 States

By 2013, adult obesity rates in 13 states may exceed 60 percent, find researchers. WebMD says that researchers also warn that there will be an increase in obesity-related diseases. Reporting jointly, the Trust for America's Health and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation both project that these 13 states could have adult obesity rates greater than 60 percent by 2030: Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee and West Virginia. The report, called "F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America's Future 2012," also notes that Colorado has the lowest obesity rate at 20.7 percent, but Mississippi has the highest at 34.9 percent.

Weight Loss Combination Pill

6 Qsymia Now Available to US Patients

VIVUS biopharmaceutical company will finally be rolling out Qysmia, a newly-approved prescription weight loss capsule, to medical professionals this week so they may begin prescribing the drug to obese patients. Qsymia is a combination of two medications that together decrease the appetite in order to produce weight loss. As a safety precaution, due to serious risks seen in clinical trials (which included birth defects in infants born to women taking the drug), the prescription will be accompanied by a Medication Guide, healthcare provider training, a patient brochure and other education tools. Qsymia will only be available to patients through certified mail order pharmacies that are part of the Qsymia Home Delivery Network, which includes CVS Pharmacy and Walgreens.
