A Beatdown for Your Lungs

1 Hookahs: Worse for Smokers Than Cigarettes

Using a hookah to smoke tobacco, increasingly popular in the West among young smokers because it allegedly filters out toxic elements, is just as unhealthy as cigarette smoking, according to a study published in the journal Respirology. Researchers compared the amount of smoke taken in by hookah users, deep-inhaling cigarette smokers, normal-inhaling smokers, and nonsmokers, and found that cigarette smokers typically take 8 to 12 puffs and inhale about one-half liter of smoke, while water pipe users smoke for 20 or more minutes, take in 20 to 50 puffs and may inhale the equivalent of 100 cigarettes. Hookah users also draw in 4 times more smoke volume per puff than normal inhalers. Previous studies found hookah smoke to have high levels of CO2, heavy metals, and carcinogenic chemicals.

2 Italy May Tax Sugary Soft Drinks

Proposed surtaxes on sugary and other unhealthy beverages, which have failed to overcome industry opposition in U.S. legislatures, may have a more promising future in Europe. France placed such a tax on soft drinks last year, and Italy's health minister, Renato Balduzzi, is reportedly considering a tax of three euro cents per bottle on certain beverages in that country -- he is waiting for public reaction to the proposal before specifying which ones. In both countries, the stated reasons for the surtax have focused on promoting a healthy diet and reducing obesity, but the European economic crisis is also a factor: the tax is estimated to bring in 280 million euros in France this year, and could produce nearly as much revenue in financially strapped Italy as well.

3 Non-Physician Providers Can Perform Abortions

A retrospective study of five studies conducted in Asia, Africa and the United States found that women who had first trimester abortions performed by midwives, nurse practitioners and physician assistants had no more complications than those done by doctors. They showed that complications such as incomplete abortion, incorrectly determining fetal age, damage to the uterus and bleeding were similar between all providers. These results are extremely important in areas of the world where access to a doctors and the procedure is restricted, physicians are outnumbered by other providers and unsafe abortion is a top reason for maternal death. Allowing non-physicians to perform abortions increases access and allows them to be done earlier which reduces the risk of complications.
