It Takes a Village

1 Texas Quints Born in Five Minutes

Five babies, born to Texas couple Carrie and Gavin Jones at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, arrived in under five minutes. The three boys and two girls, who were delivered via Caesarean section, are in stable condition but will probably have to remain in the hospital for several months until they reach a certain weight. The babies ranged in weight from 1 lb., 12 oz. to 2 lbs., 11 oz. and from 12.5 to 15.5 inches in length. A team of more than 50 medical professionals, led by Dr. Patricia Santiago-Munoz, had been assembled for the births. Said Santiago-Munoz, “A birth like this takes a village.” According to the hospital, about 12 sets of quints are born each year. Carrie Jones used fertility injections to help her conceive. The couple also has an eight-year-old son.

AB Has Greatest Risk

2 Blood Type May Determine Heart Disease Risk

Blood type may determine future heart disease risk, say researchers at Harvard School of Public Health who found that those with type O have the lowest risk and those with type AB, the rarest blood type, found in only 7% of Americans, have the highest risk. For the study, researchers examined data from two long-term US studies on adults, ages 30-75 and ruled out other health risk factors including medical history, BMI and diet. They found that people with type AB blood were 23% more likely to develop heart disease; those with type B had an 11% risk and those with type A had a 5% risk. People with type O blood, the most common type found in 43% of Americans, had the lowest risk. Researchers hope the findings will help doctors determine who is at risk for developing heart disease.

Due to Infant Skull Fractures

3 4M Bumbo Baby Seats Recalled

Four million Bumbo baby seats, sold between 8/2003 and 8/2012, are being recalled following reports of infant skull fractures, says the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC.) Bumbo seats had been recalled in October 2007 for additional safety labeling warning against using the molded seats on tables and counters. Since then, the company and the CPSC has learned of 50 incidents when babies fell from the seats placed on raised surfaces and 34 incidents when babies fell from seats placed on floors or at unknown elevations. To date, there were 21 reports of infants with skull fractures suffered from falls from Bumbo seats. Consumers are asked to stop using the seats and to call Bumbo at 866-898-4999 for a free repair kit that includes a restraint belt

Lower Fat Chocolate, with Fruit?

4 Just Created: Chocolate with Half the Fat

Chemists created a new chocolate formula using small droplets of fruit juice for a chocolate with the same good taste, but half the fat. The chemists tell all in the Journal of Materials Chemistry. CNN reports that droplets of fruit juice that are less than 30 micrometers serve to replace up to 50 percent of the triglyceride fats contained in the milk and cocoa butter found in chocolate. The fruit droplets work in a similar way as the air bubbles that decrease the density of Aero chocolate bars. Lead author Dr. Stefan Bon says the fruit droplets help to maintain the things we love about chocolate, such as its texture and melt-in-mouthness, without all the fat. Yet, it's up to the food industry to adopt this new formula and perhaps take away the fruit taste!

FTC Calls BS on DHA Content

5 Get Refund for Disney, Marvel Kid's Vitamins

The FTC called NBTY and subsidiaries Rexall Sundown and NatureSmart on their false and unproven marketing claims, and parents who purchased Disney or Marvel children's vitamins can now receive a refund. The vitamins, which featured Marvel Heroes like Spider-Man and Disney characters like Nemo, claimed to promote healthy brain and eye development in kids. The packaging and print ads called out the amount of DHA or Docosahexaenoic acid (an omega-3 fatty acid) contained in the vitamins as significant, but the FTC found that the vitamins contain only trace amounts of DHA (0.1 mg). NBTY also made claims about eye and brain health that aren't supported by scientific evidence, says the FTC. Parents should visit NBTY to apply for a refund.

Be Mindful, Feel Less Lonely

6 Meditation Can Reduce Loneliness in Elderly

Meditation can reduce loneliness in older adults and significantly reduce expression of inflammatory genes, suggest researchers at UCLA. Loneliness has been linked with an increased risk for depression, heart disease, Alzheimer's disease and premature death. Feeling lonely has also been associated with an increase in activity of inflammation-related genes, which can promote disease. In the study, adults between 55 and 85 participated in mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) lasting eight weeks. The program helps train the brain to be attentive to the present and not dwell in the past or look to the future. The adults who participated in meditation self-reported reduced loneliness, and had blood tests that revealed a significant decrease in expression of genes related to inflammation.

Rapid MetabolIsm Is Dangerous

7 Codeine Deadly for Some Children

Three children between the ages of 2 and 5 died and one experienced potentially fatal hyperventilation after being given codeine because their bodies broke it down quicker than normal. When ingested, the liver metabolizes codeine to morphine. Approximately seven percent of people have multiple copies of the enzymes that break codeine down and are known as ultra-rapid metabolizers. Up to 28 percent of people with Ethiopian, Saudi Arabian and North African lineage have this condition. The FDA recommends that kids should get the lowest dose of codeine for the shortest time possible and only if necessary. They should be monitored for signs of overdose such as excessive sleepiness and trouble breathing. Women who are ultra-metabolizers should be careful about taking codeine when breastfeeding.
