1 Hookah Smoking on Rise for College 1st-Years

Hookah smoking is on the rise among 1st year female college students, says research from The Miriam Hospital’s Ctr for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine. The study suggests a link to marijuana and alcohol use and found that the more alcohol women consumed, the more likely they were to smoke a hookah. The same was true for women who smoked pot. Researchers say that the popularity of hookah smoking could eventually result in a public health issue since it’s been linked to many of the same ailments caused by cigarette smoking, including lung cancer and respiratory illnesses. “... prevention and intervention efforts should jointly target all substance use, including hookah, alcohol, marijuana and cigarettes, to optimize the public health impact,” says lead author Robyn L. Fielder, M.S.

Helps Patients Control Movement

2 Caffeine May Ease Symptoms of Parkinson’s

Caffeine may ease symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, finds a McGill U study. A psychomotor stimulant, caffeine eases tiredness associated with Parkinson’s, explains lead author Dr. Ronald Postuma who aimed to discover how it might impact symptoms including slowness of movement, muscle stiffness and shaking. The small-scale study gave one group of patients 100 mg doses of caffeine 2x/day for 3 weeks followed by 3 weeks of 200 mg of caffeine 2x/day. The control group received a placebo. Those who received caffeine experienced an improvement in their motor symptoms. "This was due to improvement in speed of movement and a reduction in stiffness,” says Dr. Postuma. Caffeine did not affect nighttime sleep. Larger scale studies need to be carried out to support these findings, say researchers.

Fertility Too

3 Childhood Obesity May Affect Puberty

Childhood obesity may affect the timing of puberty and lead to reproductive difficulties, especially in females, finds an analysis published in Frontiers in Endocrinology. While extremes - anorexia and obesity - have been associated with reproductive problems, researchers are still learning about the effects of obesity on the endocrine system. Experts note that puberty appears to be starting earlier, especially in girls. The study indicates that, within the last decade, scientists have begun to uncover the molecular mechanisms that affect pubertal development. The issue is controversial and widely debated. Some studies indicate correlations between early puberty, metabolic disease, some cancers, depression and anxiety as well as delinquent behavior that may persist into adulthood.

Want Some Politics with That?

4 Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day

Chick-fil-A may want the gay marriage controversary surrounding their chain of chicken restaurants to go away, but former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee is keeping it alive with what he called "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day." In a show of support for the Chick-fil-A president and COO Dan Cathy's views on gay marriage, lots of people lined up to buy chicken sandwiches today in areas, such as Dallas, Texas and Laurel, Miss. Huckabee asked customers to buy sandwiches as a response to the backlash against the restaurants and Cathy, who in July told The Baptist Press that he favors the "biblical definition of the family unit." CNN reports that Brett Walker, a customer in West Virginia, waited 40 minutes to receive his order "in support of free speech."

2 Pickle Per Sandwich Rule

5 Make a Chick-fil-A Sandwich at Home

Our favorite test kitchen chef, Serious Eats's Kenji López-Alt, says he doesn't like to mix his food with his politics, but to somewhat decrease his consumption of Chick-fil-A's "awesome, crispety-crunchety, spicy-sweet and salty, juicy" chicken sandwiches, he's developed a clone recipe. Thankfully, the Chick-fil-A sandwich is relatively simple: toasted, buttered bun, pickles, and fried chicken breast. Helpfully, Chick-fil-A discloses the ingredients on its website. By massaging milk-moistened coating into a brined chicken breast, López-Alt managed to reproduce the "unparalleled juiciness" of the original. Why isn't López-Alt completely boycotting Chick-fil-A? The store's upbeat and friendly staff means he "can't help but feel just a little more gay after stepping into a Chick-Fil-A."

Affect Blank Stare & Look Crazy

6 Stop People from Sitting Next to You on a Bus

Yale sociologist Esther Kim rode the bus for three years over thousands of miles in a quest to learn the rules that govern social conduct in confined spaces, so-called nonsocial transient behavior. Kim was able to verify that "Avoid sitting next to anyone" is rule #1. But she came up with practical tactics you can use to repel others from sitting next to you when the bus starts to fill up: Adopt a crazy-looking blank stare; pile coats and bags on the seat next to you; avoid eye contact; lean against the window and stretch your legs out; pretend to sleep; and sit in the aisle seat with headphones on. Interviewing fellow passengers, she determined their goals included: Avoiding fat, sweaty people; attracting "normal" people if you can't keep the adjacent seat empty; and staying safe.
