Helpers Become Net Experts

1 Caregivers #1 Seekers of Online Health Info

Caregiving friends and family members are among the heaviest and savviest internet users in America, with more than one in five U.S. adults going online in pursuit of health information for others. According to a new study, 30 percent of adults are to varying extents caregivers for other adults or children. Of that group, nearly 80 percent have internet access, and nearly 90 percent of the Net-enabled make regular and often extensive use of it researching health-related subjects ranging from calorie counts to hospital safety ratings to symptom diagnoses on behalf of their care receivers. As a bloc, caregivers use the Net for health information more than any other group, and, according to study author Susannah Fox, are particularly able "to navigate the frontier of home health care."

Boosts Immune Response

2 Kidney Cancer Vaccine Successful in Studies

The breakthrough kidney cancer vaccine, IMA901, which activates the body’s own T-cells against the tumor, has been successful in clinical studies, say researchers at the U of Tubingen and Immatics Biotechnologies GmbH, a company started by Tubingen scientists. The studies show that the vaccine, which has far fewer side effects than other treatments, can extend the patient’s life for longer than chemotherapy. "This work is a milestone in the development of cancer immune therapies. The principle applied here - of active immunization against cancer antigens previously identified in cancer cells - can be used against practically all types of cancer,” says researcher Dr. Hans-Georg Rammensee. Immatics researchers have published other successful clinical studies for bowel and prostate cancers.

Complies with Privacy Laws

3 US Gov’t to Crack Down on Health Care Fraud

Health care fraud drains billions of dollar annually but now there’s a new effort to stop it. The Obama Admin. announced a plan to help prevent health care fraud by cross-referencing billing information with insurance companies and local governments - a process that had been disallowed due to privacy laws. Now, the Dept. of Health and Human Svcs. and insurance companies will delete patients’ personal information so they can look for fraud trends. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius says the collaborative efforts of the data exchange mean that insurers and the government can share prevention tools and alert everyone when fraud is spotted. The administration recovered $4.1 billion in health care fraud in 2011 but “there’s more to do,” says Attorney General Eric Holder.

Cutesy Name; Nasty Symptoms

4 Tick-Borne Babesiosis Cases on the Rise

Cases of tick-borne Babesiosis are rising and may one day rival Lyme disease as the most common US tick-born disease, says a new detailed study. Babesiosis, identified in 1888 by Dr. Victor Babes, is slowly spreading across the US. Ticks get it from mice and white-tailed deer, the same deer that carry Lyme disease. While Babesiosis is still rare, it’s worrisome and highly underreported because symptoms can be mild and it’s difficult to diagnose without a blood test, say experts. Symptoms include fever, muscle and joint pain, loss of appetite and nausea. Most people who become infected require antibiotics although the infection may clear in some untreated patients. An insidious way Babesiosis is spread is through donated blood from those who are unaware they have the infection.

Improve Balance After Stroke

5 Group Yoga Found Helpful for Stroke Survivors

Group yoga may help improve balance among stroke survivors, even when it's not started until six months or longer after the stoke, say researchers. The classes, attended by 47 older adults, were taught by a registered yoga therapist. Regenstrief Institute investigator Arlene Schmid, Ph.D., OTR, lead the study, which was published online in the journal Stroke. Research findings show that yoga exercises, including modified yoga postures, brought about a statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvement in balance. Since it combines postures, meditation and breathing, yoga may be more therapeutic with different effects on the body than regular exercise, comments Dr. Schmid. Attending yoga classes can also significantly extend rehab beyond the first year after a stroke.

Chopstick-Forced Smile Too

6 Smiling During Stress May Help Your Heart

Smile during times of stress, and your heart may say thanks! Researchers found that participants who were asked to smile during a stressful activity had lower heart rate levels after the activity compared to those with neutral expressions. People who had Duchenne smiles, engaging the muscles around the mouth and eyes, had the greatest benefit. The findings, published in the APS journal Psychological Science, suggest that smiling could influence our physical state. Researchers believe smiling during brief stressors could help to lower the intensity of the stress response, regardless of whether the person smiling is happy. It's also worthy to note that a third group of people were forced to smile by holding chopsticks in their mouths! They were still happier than the non-smiling group.
