A survey of nearly 51,000 American adults over a six-year period by the University of California Davis Medical School has found that, based on BMI measurements, it is significantly more hazardous to one's health to be classified as "underweight" than to be classified as "obese," or even to qualify as "severely obese." Those in the latter class were found to be just 1.26 times more statistically likely to die than those of normal weight, a rate of risk roughly half as great as that associated with an "underweight" classification. The findings, published in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine, may reflect problems with the validity of the BMI measurement more than an accurate depiction of the relationship between overweight and mortality.

2 Low Fat Diet May Reduce Hot Flashes

Weight loss from a low fat, high fruit and vegetable diet may reduce or eliminate menopausal symptoms, including night sweats and hot flashes, finds a Kaiser Permanente study of 17,473 women. Symptomatic women who lost 10% or more of their body weight on a low fat diet were more likely to reduce or eliminate menopausal symptoms after a year compared with a control group that maintained their weight. "While the mechanism is not completely understood, hot flashes and night sweats are thought to be caused by a complex interaction that involves fluctuating hormone levels, the hypothalamus region of the brain that regulates body temperature, brain chemicals and receptors, and the body's blood vessels and sweat glands," says research scientist and lead author Candyce Kroenke, ScD, MPH.

3 McDonald's Explains Big Mac Special Sauce

McDonald's has revealed just what's inside their special sauce on Big Macs, but they also admit that the ingredients haven't exactly been "secret." In the newly released video, McDonald's executive chef Dan Coudreaut makes a fresh Big Mac at home with ingredients purchased from a store. As it turns out, the special sauce recipe consists of plain mayo, sweet pickle relish, yellow mustard, onion powder, white wine vinegar, garlic powder and paprika. Yahoo reports that while copycat recipes for the special sauce have been available online, the video is a new move for McDonald's, and is part of an effort to show that their burgers are like what you might make at home. The only mystery here is whether the McDonald's chef thinks what he made tastes better than what you get at the restaurant.

4 Meditation, Exercise Fights Colds and Flu

For those of us who have to endure long, cold winters, new research conducted at the University of Wisconsin – Madison suggests that moderate exercise and mindfulness meditation may help the immune system fight off the colds and viruses that run rampant during the season. The study involved 149 adults and researcher found that regular exercise or mediation that focused on emotions and the body reduced the number of respiratory infections by 40 to 50 percent and both groups had less sick days compared to people who did not exercise or meditate. The Flu vaccine reduces the number of infections by 50 to 60 percent, but only against specific strains. Every year in the U.S. approximately 36,000 people die from the flu and respiratory viruses account for 40 million missed school and work days.
