Team Sports As Therapy

1 Physical Activity a Tonic for ADHD Kids

A very small-scale but apparently unprecedented study of the effect of exercise on children afflicted with ADHD has found that 45 minutes of vigorous sports activity three times a week for 10 weeks resulted in a decrease in aggression, anxiety, depression, impulsiveness, inattention, and social disorders. Engaging in team sports such as soccer and basketball not only improved such motor skills as jumping and catching objects, but also improved their ability to interact with others, an unexpected benefit. The study involved 21 ADHD patients aged 7 to 12, divided into exercising and non-exercising groups. The results were based on neuropsychological testing and detailed reports from parents and teachers. The study was conducted by a PhD. candidate at the University of Montreal.

Fat Weighs on Your Attitude

2 Fitness Trainer Gains 70 Pounds, Perspective

Drew Manning, the fitness trainer who couldn't understand his clients' inability to maintain weight-loss discipline and, as CalorieLab reported, deliberately gained 72 pounds on a six-month program of junk food, fast food, soft drinks and lethargy in order to find out, has completed his "Fit2Fat2Fit" experiment and is back. After a second six-month campaign, this time centered on healthy food and extensive gym time, he's returned to his original buffed-beefcake physical condition. But his attitude has been permanently changed, he says. He now understands the desperate food cravings, sugar deprivation headaches, sense of shame, insecurity, shriveled self-confidence and other "mental and emotional issues" that make weight loss so difficult. Those issues, he now believes, are the key.

Get Six Hours of Shut Eye

3 Too Little Sleep Quadruples Stroke Risk

Too little sleep quadruples stroke risk in healthy, normal-weight adults, ages 45+, finds a new study presented at SLEEP 2012, the annual meeting of sleep experts. The study, which followed 5600 healthy people for up to 3 years, found healthy-weight people who reported sleeping fewer than 6 hours/night had a 4.5 times greater risk for stroke than those who slept 7 or 8 hours/night. The risk was not apparent in sleep deprived overweight people. Experts say chronic sleep deprivation causes changes in blood pressure, heart rate, inflammation and glucose levels. “It not only affects the blood vessels to the heart and body, but also to the brain,” says Dr. Phyllis C. Zee, Northwestern U Schl of Med. While more research is needed, the study highlights the importance of healthy sleep habits.

Effect Stronger with Zocor

4 Statins Contribute to Fatigue, Lowered Energy

Statin users are more likely than non-users to experience fatigue upon exertion, decreased energy, or both. Researchers from the University of California, San Diego say that the findings should be taken into account when weighing the risk versus benefit of statins, particularly since exertional fatigue may affect exercise participation. Published in Archives of Internal Medicine, the research reveals that patients on Zocor 20 mg (simvastatin) or Pravachol (pravastatin) 40 mg were significantly more likely than those on placebo to report fatigue with exertion, worsening energy levels, or both. Patients taking Zocor had greater cholesterol reduction, but Zocor appeared to have a stronger effect on energy levels than Pravachol.

Coroner Says It's True

5 Yes, a Dingo Got Her Baby

Early Tuesday, a coroner in Australia announced that a dingo caused the death of two-month-old Azaria Chamberlain 30 years ago. CNN reports that Elizabeth Morris, coroner for Northern Territory, ruled that Azaria died as a result of being attacked and taken by a dingo, a wild dog native to Australia. The baby's mother, Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton, was sentenced to life in jail for her daughter's murder, but the conviction was later overturned. During the murder trial, a witness spoke of hearing Lindy cry out: "dingo's got my baby." The phrase was made famous by "A Cry in the Dark," a 1988 film starring Meryl Streep.

Brain Activates Reward Center

6 Sleep Deprivation Leads to Bad Food Choices

When you do not get enough sleep, the brain will cause you to crave junk food finds a new study from Columbia University. Marie-Pierre St-Onge and colleagues studied the brains of 25 men and women using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while they looked at pictures of healthy foods and unhealthy foods. The scans were taken under two conditions – after five nights of restricted sleep or after a good night’s rest of 9 continuous hours. When presented with unhealthy foods, the brain was activated in certain reward regions. The volunteers were more likely to crave foods that were sweet or salty after periods of sleep deprivation. Previous research has also shown that lack of sleep triggers other responses that cause people to increase calorie consumption, leading to weight gain.

Blind Spot in Diabetes Treatment

7 Two Drugs Increase Eye Problems in Diabetics

Results from a study have linked the diabetes drugs Avandia and Actos to an elevated risk of macular edema, even though the risk remains small. Information collected from a database of over 10,000 type 2 diabetics without macular edema found that within one year later, 1.3 percent who were on either drug developed the condition which leads to blurry vision while 0.2 percent not taking the drug developed the condition. One in five diabetics will develop this condition. While it is not easy to separate the disease and the drugs from the condition, this study suggests that these drugs which belong to a class called thiazolidinediones lead to fluid buildup behind the eyes. Previous research linked Avandia to a higher risk of having a heart attack and Actos to developing bladder cancer.
