1 Disney Media to Ban Unhealthy Food Ads

At a time when the typical U.S. child aged 2-17 sees an average of 14.5 food and beverage TV commercials each day, the Disney company plans to set nutritional requirements, including limits on sugar, calories and saturated fat, for any such product advertised or promoted on its TV channels -- the Disney Channel, Disney Junior, and Disney XD -- or during children's programs on Disney-owned ABC stations. The limits, which would virtually ban most junk food and sugary soda ads, will be based on federal public health recommendations, will be in effect by 2015, and will also apply to Disney's radio network and website. Disney theme parks also plan to offer nutritionally sound children's breakfasts and increase their food venues' emphasis on fruits and vegetables by next year.

17th US State to Approve Weed

2 Medical Marijuana Legal in CT

Medical marijuana has been legalized in Connecticut making it the 17th US state to legalize the drug. Other states, plus the District of Columbia, where medical marijuana is legal, have reported abuses and CT’s law entails restrictions to prevent abuse. Says Governor Dannel Malloy, "With careful regulation and safeguards, this law will allow a doctor and a patient to decide what is in that patient's best interest.” Patients and their caregivers must register with the Department of Protection and a doctor must certify that there is a medical need for the drug. "For years, we've heard from so many patients with chronic diseases who undergo treatments like chemotherapy or radiation and are denied the palliative benefits that medical marijuana would provide," adds the governor.

Don't Have to Be Obese for Risk

3 Strong Link Between Waist Size, Diabetes Risk

Measuring the waist circumference of overweight patients can help doctors identify patients with a risk of future diabetes that's equal to the risk faced by obese people. Researchers, publishing their findings in PLoS Medicine, say that some overweight men and women with large waists have an equivalent risk of diabetes as obese people. WebMD reports that a large waist for a woman is 35 inches or more, and for men it's 40 inches or more. Obese people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more and non-obese people with large waists have a higher risk of developing diabetes.

4 You May Not Need As Much Water As You Think

The idea that you need to drink eight glasses of water a day to stay hydrated is a health myth. In an editorial published recently in Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health on behalf of the Public Health Association of Australia, experts say that we get enough fluids from the beverages we drink and foods we consume. Drinks like caffeinated coffee and tea count, too! And we do, in fact, get fluids from foods. Experts say that it's not a bad idea to consume 64 ounces of fluids a day, the equivalent of eight 8-ounce drinks, but it's not a scientifically proven recommendation. TODAY Health reports that the best advice is to drink when you're thirsty.
