In Defense of Time's Cover Mom

1 Nursing to Age 3: Common, Healthy and Normal

Many people have reacted with shock or taken offense at Time magazine's cover photo of mom Jamie Lynne Grumet nursing her 3-year-old son, primarily because of the child’s age. But there are several facts in her favor. Worldwide, most children are breast fed to age 3 or older. In the U.S., almost one in four mothers nurses for at least one year, and pediatricians say the number who nurse well beyond that age is greater than reported. The World Health Organization recommends nursing to at least age 2, and the American Academy of Pediatrics supports nursing for as long as both mother and child want to continue. A study of U.S. children nursed beyond age 3 found them to be psychologically healthy, and babies who are nursed are statistically more likely to avoid childhood diseases.

Mouth and Teeth Injuries

2 Baby Bottles Can Be Hazards to Kids

Baby bottles, pacifiers and sippy cups may cause injuries to children’s teeth and mouths, especially if children are walking or running while using them. Using data from a nationwide survey on children ages 3 and under who visited emergency rooms between 1991 and 2010, researchers found that there were about 2270 cases involving these products, 2/3 of them in children ages 1-2. “This is right around the time that kids start to walk and run and aren't very good at it yet," says lead author Sarah Keim, Nationwide Children's Hosp. About 66% of the injuries were related to bottle use; 86% involved a fall. Sippy cup injuries were more common in children, ages 2 and up. Study authors recommend that children stay seated while drinking and that parents be more watchful once babies become mobile.

Restored Energy May Have Helped

3 Testosterone May Help Older Men Lose Weight

Testosterone supplements may help hormone-deficient men lose weight, find researchers. Presented at the European Congress on Obesity, the study reveals that men who took the supplements lost an average of 35.2 pounds over five years as their testosterone levels became normal again. The study involved obese men between 38 and 83 years old. BBC says the findings suggest that raising testosterone levels could reduce waist circumference and blood pressure. However, testosterone supplements may increase the risk for prostate cancer and heart disease. Men in the study had several problems due to their hormone-deficiency, including lack of energy. Researchers say that the supplements may have led to reduced weight because of restored energy levels that helped men become more physically active.

Snake Mistook for Stick in Mulch

4 Man Gets Rattlesnake Bite Inside Walmart

Walmart customer Mica Craig, 47, was bitten by a rattlesnake at a Walmart store in Washington State. Craig was shopping in the garden section of the Clarkston store in eastern Washington when he removed what he thought was a stick from some mulch. The "stick" sank its fangs into Craig's hand. He remains in the hospital, and may lose feeling in two fingers. However, Craig did manage to kill the rattlesnake after it bit him. When the incident occurred on Friday, Craig was shopping for mulch for his marijuana plants, which he has a license to grow for medical reasons.

Another Six Months for Changes

5 Sunscreen Makers Get Extension for New Rule

Sunscreen makers now have another six months to comply with label changes ordered by the FDA. The changes were supposed to be in place this June, but now the FDA is asking manufacturers to get the revised bottles on shelves as soon as possible. The FDA wants sunscreen makers to clear up confusion over how much protection their products offer, and they've asked for several changes to labels. One of the changes involves disclosing whether the product protects against both sunburn and skin cancer. If the product doesn't protect against both ultraviolet A rays that are linked to skin cancer and ultraviolet B rays that cause sunburn, it must have a special warning label. The FDA also no longer allows sunscreen makers to claim their products are "waterproof" or "sweatproof."

Poke and Breath

6 Acupuncture Makes Breathing Easier with COPD

Results from a study involving 68 Japanese with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) found that three months of acupuncture along with the standard therapy improved breathing compared to those who got the sham procedure which does not even break the skin. They measured improvement with a six-minute walking test and found that the acupuncture group was able to walk farther. While the results have to be interpreted within the context of a small, short-term study, researcher hypothesize that the stress relief and increased strength and mobility of chest muscles due to acupuncture makes the chest more pliable, allowing the patients to breathe easier. It should also be stressed that acupuncture should be used in addition to the standard treatments used to manage COPD.
