Pain Meds Lay Big Hurt on Babies

1 One Drug-Addicted Baby Born Every Hour in US

On average, a baby addicted to some form of prescription drug taken by the pregnant mother is born every hour in the U.S., for a total of more than 13,500 babies per year who will suffer some degree of drug withdrawal. The most recent statistics, as reported Tuesday in the AMA Journal, show that this number nearly tripled between 2000 and 2009, and that treating the infant victims cost $720 million a year as of 2009, mostly paid by Medicare. Babies exposed to habituating drugs in the womb are 22 percent more likely to have breathing problems, 12 percent more likely to have a low birthweight, and 15 percent more likely to experience feeding problems than normal babies. The soaring use of potent prescription painkillers such as Oxycontin and Vicodin is a major cause, experts believe.

1 in 10 Smoke 20x a Month

2 Frequent Marijuana Use Spikes among US Teens

Frequent marijuana use by US teens has spiked by 80% since 2008 says a new report from The Partnership of Drugfree.org. It indicates that one in 10 teens smokes marijuana at least 20 times a month. The research is based on an anonymous questionnaire circulated to 3322 teens in grades 9-12. Partnership President Steve Pasierb places the blame for the spike in pot use squarely on the shoulders of parents who are likely to think that it’s no big deal. "Parents are talking about cocaine and heroin, things that scare them," says Pasierb. “They need to be stressing the message that [smoking pot] is unhealthy" and can lead to substance abuse problems later in life. Teens who smoke pot often are almost twice as likely to use harder drugs including cocaine and crack, finds the report.

Artist Ahead of His Time

3 Leonardo da Vinci's Drawings Mostly Accurate

Leonardo da Vinci, who produced thousands of drawings of the human body, was about 300 years ahead of his time, say clinical anatomists. BBC reports that the largest exhibition of the artist's anatomy drawings go on display at the Queen's Gallery at Buckingham Palace this week. Leonardo da Vinci died in 1519, but his drawings may still help us understand the human body today. Even though the drawings are more than 500 years old, experts say some of them are as accurate as anything that can be completed by today's scientific artists. Peter Abrahams, professor of clinical anatomy at Warwick University, tells BBC that Leonard da Vinci was a "meticulous observer," as well as a "meticulous experimental scientist."

To Source 24 to 48 Hours Sooner

4 USDA to Speed Up Process for Tracking E. Coli

The USDA may be able to find the source of E. coli contamination in ground beef 24 to 48 hours sooner. While current guidelines require waiting for additional testing to confirm E. coli before starting an investigation, the new process allows for tracing to the source of possibly contaminated ground beef as soon as an initial positive test is found. The earlier procedure for tracking starts when the USDA finds the common strain of E. coli that causes the most severe illness, the 0157:H7 strain. MSNBC reports that around 12,000 to 13,000 samples of ground beef, as well as beef trimmings, are tested for E. coli every year.

Women in 40s Need Screening

5 No Family History, Not Reason Skip Mammogram

More than half of women ages 40 to 49 who were diagnosed with breast cancer after mammography screening in a study between 2000 and 2010 had no family history of breast cancer. The study, conducted at Elizabeth Wende Breast Care in New York, was published in American Journal of Roentgenology. Stamatia Destounis, MD, the lead author of the study, says, "We decided to look at our patients diagnosed with breast cancer in the 40 to 49 age group in lieu of recent proposed changes with mammography screening guidelines and the scrutiny over screening mammography." Dr. Destounis says that they weren't surprised by the study results, and that women in their 40s do benefit from yearly screening mammography.

Arithmetic for Children's Health

6 Poor Math Skills a Formula for Dosing Errors

A study involving 289 parents of children under the age of 8 who had been seen in the ER and were treated with liquid medication for a short period of time found that parents poor math skills were more likely to give them the wrong doses. Math and reading assessment tests revealed that almost 33 percent of the parents had poor reading skills and a staggering 83 percent had low math skills. Forty-one percent of parents made a mistake in dosing. The risk of a medication-dosing error was five times higher in parents with math skills at or below a third-grade level compared to those at a sixth-grade level or above. Researchers believe that health care providers can use strategies to help parents understand numerical concepts related to dosing liquid medication to reduce these types of errors.
