Despite Rising Obesity Rates

1 Worldwide, Megatons of Food Go to Waste

Preparing and serving smaller food portions isn't just a practical weight-loss tactic, it would also reduce the amount of excess food we toss out uneaten, which is huge. According to the recent Reuters Food and Agriculture Summit, 30% to 50% of all the food produced on earth is never consumed. Americans throw out 33 pounds of food a month, nearly 400 pounds per year on average. Almost 1/4 of all eggs and even more fresh produce winds up as garbage. The largest solid waste component in U.S. landfills is unused food; 33 million tons were added in 2010 alone. Among the main contributors: edible but blemished and thus unsellable food, unconsumed restaurant food, and food that spoils in refrigerators or, in poorer countries, due to a lack of decent transportation and/or refrigeration.

Naughty Girl, No Pill for You!

2 U.S. Pharmacies Deny Teens Contraception

By federal law, 17-year-old girls can buy emergency contraception, the "morning after" pill, to prevent an unwanted pregnancy, but a study by Boston medical institutions found that almost 20% of researchers who posed as girls of that age were told otherwise by pharmacies in Austin, Cleveland, Nashville, Philadelphia, and Portland, Oregon, sometimes being informed that they couldn't get the pill under any circumstances, even with a prescription, because they were too young. In addition, 3% of researchers who posed as physicians were told that their 17-year-old patients couldn't legally get the "morning after" pill, although it is not an abortive agent, but acts before an egg is fertilized. Approximately 85% of all teen pregnancies in the U.S. each year are unintended.

But No Cats in Hats in Class

3 Medical School Renamed to Honor Dr. Seuss

Dartmouth's medical school has been renamed "The Audrey and Theodor Geisel School of Medicine" in honor of the 1925 Dartmouth graduate Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. NPR reports that Geisel, who died in 1991, liked to make donations to his alma mater. His second wife, Audrey, is a 90-year-old nurse and curator of Geisel's works. Dartmouth President Jim Yong Kim says that renaming the school is a tribute to the two individuals whose work still changes the world for the better.

Oh, You Have Low T Too!

4 Birth Control May Affect Relationships

Women with lower testosterone levels caused by using birth control pills or other hormone-based contraceptives tend to be more attracted to men who have low testosterone levels too, finds a recent study. Research has shown that a man with lower testosterone is less likely to cheat and is more supportive and a better provider. CNN reports that previous research has also shown that most women are more sexually attracted to higher testosterone levels, and mothers who stopped using birth control reported less sexual satisfaction and found their husbands less attractive. Some experts caution that the problem or confusion may not be caused so much by going off the pill as much as taking it in the first place.

Risk Decreases After Stopping

5 Depo-Provera Shots Linked with Breast Cancer

Birth control injection Depo-Provera has been linked with a doubling of breast cancer risk for young women. According to the new study, recent use of the birth control shot for at least a year was tied with the increased breast cancer risk, but that risk fell to the level of non-users several months after discontinuing the injections. Compared to non-users, women who had received the injections within the last five years were 2.2 times more likely to have a breast cancer diagnosis. Reported in Cancer Research, the study results were a surprise to breast cancer epidemiologist Dr. Christopher Li, who didn't expect to find an increased breast cancer risk associated with Depo-Provera injections. The study involved 1,028 women 20 to 44 years old living in the Seattle area.

Special K's Special Problems

6 Urinary Problems Linked to "Special K"

Results from a study involving 3,806 young people has found that a little over a quarter of the 1,285 who used ketamine, known as “Special K,” within a year of participating in the study have experienced urinary tract problems such as abdominal pain and difficulty controlling their bladders. More frequent use and taking higher doses was directly linked to the drug that is popular in the clubs that people snort or inject to feel euphoric and like they were stepping out of their bodies. Of the 251 who described their problems, 43 percent still having problems but were still taking ketamine. Fifty percent saw improvement in symptoms but the urinary problems got worse in four percent of these individuals, indicating that beyond a certain point the damage is irreversible.

Each Drug Actually Has a Purpose

7 Wide Variety of Drugs Present in Chickens

Move over pink slime! New studies have found that ground feathers from poultry in six states in the U.S. and China contain antibiotics, acetaminophen, antihistamine, arsenic, Prozac and caffeine. While researchers were shocked that all these chemicals were present in poultry, each actually has a purpose in food animals. Prozac, antihistamines and acetaminophen lower stress to maximize growth and caffeine reverses those effects. Arsenic was detected in every sample researchers tested, and makes the flesh a more appealing color. Antibiotics promote growth and fights the risks posed by dirty living conditions. Those found belong to a class known as fluoroquinones which was banned for use in poultry in 2005 and are linked to creating antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections in humans.
