1 Dental Plaque Bacteria Can Cause Blood Clots

Dental plaque bacteria that enter the bloodstream can cause blood clots and perhaps endocarditis, an infection of the heart. When Streptococcus gordonii, a normal inhabitant of the mouth that contributes to dental plaque, enters the bloodstream through bleeding gums, it creates a clotting factor and inflammation of blood vessels that can block blood supply to the heart or brain. Infective endocarditis is treated with surgery or antibiotics, but it’s becoming increasingly antibiotic resistant and about 30% of patients die. Research centers on creating new compounds to inhibit growth of the dental plaque bacteria. “What our work clearly shows is how important it is to keep your mouth healthy through regular brushing and flossing," says researcher Dr Helen Petersen.

FDA Supports Research on Safety

2 FDA Says No to Proposed BPA Ban

The FDA has said no thanks to the National Resources Defense Council's petition for banning bisphenol A (BPA). While the FDA has denied the petition, it does support research to examine the safety of BPA. The FDA has also said that this announcement isn't a final safety determination, reports CNN. BPA, a chemical blamed for harm to the central nervous system and other problems, is contained in the linings of food and beverage containers. The chemical is also inside certain plastics, such as what's used for water bottles. Some food companies, like Campbell Soup Co., are removing BPA from their food containers on their own, despite the lack of regulations.

Turtles with Too Many Poop Germs

3 Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Small Turtles

Small turtles with a shell length that's less than four inches have been linked with a 16-state Salmonella outbreak that's sickened 66 people, including 36 children under 10 years old. According to the CDC, the strains of Salmonella associated with this outbreak are rare types known as Salmonella Sandiego, Salmonella Pomona and Salmonella Poona. The bacteria is shed in turtle droppings and may contaminate the turtle's body and areas where turtles live, such as aquariums and the water inside the habitat. Since 1975, the FDA has banned the sale and distribution of small turtles.

Dolls to Be Donated to Hospitals

4 Bald Barbie Coming Soon for Kids Without Hair

Mattel has agreed to produce bald Barbie dolls to be donated to hospitals where they'll be given to kids who've lost their hair. The toy company decided to produce the dolls in response to a campaign on Facebook involving more than 150,000 people who asked for a bald Barbie. The doll, a friend of Barbie, will be distributed to hospitals throughout the U.S. and Canada. According to San Francisco Chronicle, Mattel will also make monetary donations to CureSearch for Children's Cancer, as well as the National Alopecia Areata Foundation.

More Calls to 1-800-QUIT-NOW

5 CDC's Anti-Smoking Campaign Gets Big Response

The CDC's new graphic anti-smoking ads have led to a big increase in calls to 1-800-QUIT-NOW and visits to smokefree.gov, reports USA Today. The $54 million campaign will last for 12 weeks total. Calls to the stop smoking phone line totaled more than 33,000 in the last week (the first week of the campaign), compared to fewer than 14,500 calls to the phone number during the week before the campaign started. The increased calls represent the largest jump ever in the seven-year history of the phone line. Also, the number of visitors to the government's smoking cessation website increased from around 20,000 to 66,000, the biggest traffic jump ever for the website.

Harms Older Men, Fails Young Men

6 Benefit of Prostate Cancer Vaccine Questioned

A scientist and former hedge-fund analyst is questioning the benefit of the prostate cancer vaccine Provenge. When Marie Huber looked at the data by age, men over 65 had a significant difference in survival rates between the vaccine and placebo groups, but not younger men. Because immunity weakens with age, survival rate should be much higher in younger men who got the vaccine made of their own white blood cells (wbcs). WBCs from the placebo group were frozen and died while those of the vaccine group stayed at room temperature. Injecting dead cells may have increased inflammation and promoted cancer which would be harder on older men. Many doctors have voiced their opinions by not using Provenge, but investors of Dendreon’s only product are publicly expressing anger about this new study.
