1 Popcorn: As Healthy As Fruits and Veggies?

Nutritional scientists have reported that a single serving of popcorn delivers more healthful anatioxidant polyphenols, up to 300 mg, than are provided by the average American's entire daily intake of fruits (255 mg) or vegetables (218 mg), and "may be the perfect snack food." The key to its antioxidant advantage is concentration: fruits, mostly water, dilute their polythenols by 90 percent, compared to just 4 percent for popcorn. Popcorn is also the only snack food that is 100 percent unprocessed whole grain; one serving equals 70 percent of the whole grain in the average daily diet. Scientists cautioned that popcorn is no substitute for fruits and veggies, which contain essential vitamins and nutrients, and should be air-popped, unbuttered, and only lightly salted.

2 Chocolate Eating Habit Linked with Lower BMI

Eating chocolate regularly is linked with lower body mass index (BMI), report researchers from the University of California, San Diego. Published in Archives of Internal Medicine, the study found that people who consumed chocolate more frequently had lower BMIs even though they didn't eat fewer calories or exercise more than other people in the study who were heavier. Researchers think that the slight increase in metabolism after eating chocolate could potentially account for the lower BMI. However, researchers also warn that you still can't eat unlimited amounts of chocolate! Plus, CNN reminds us that it's possible that the higher BMI group could have underestimated or unreported the amount of chocolate they ate.

Three of Four Plants Affected

3 Pink Slime Plants Are Suspending Operations

Beef Products Inc., the company that makes "pink slime," is suspending operations at three of its four plants that produce lean, finely textured beef. The low-cost beef filler has been dubbed "pink slime" by critics. The filler, made from lean bits of meat from muscle and connective tissue, is treated with a gas composed of ammonium hydroxide. The gas is used since the parts of beef in the filler are more likely to contain bacteria like E. coli or Salmonella. MSNBC reports that the plants are suspending operations amid an outcry from the public. The filler has been in the news a lot recently since the USDA said that schools can decide not to buy beef containing the ingredient. Plus, McDonald's has announced they no longer use beef containing the filler.

Reduce Your Chances of Dying

4 Stand Up and You Might Live Longer

Standing up more often could greatly reduce your risk of dying within the next three years, suggests a study of more than 200,000 people. Even if you're physically active, standing up more often can reduce death risk. The study revealed that adults who sat for 11 or more hours daily experienced a 40 percent increased risk of dying in the next three years compared to people in the study who sat for fewer than four hours daily. Researchers accounted for weight, health status and physical activity. The study, from University of Sydney's School of Public Health, was published in Archives of Internal Medicine. An editorial in the health journal suggested that the research was strong enough for doctors to prescribe "reduced daily sitting time."

A Sleepy Medium for Heart Health

5 Too Much, Too Little Sleep Bad for Heart

Preliminary results from a study looking at over 3,000 patients over 45 years old in the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey showed that getting less than six hours or more than eight hours of sleep can increase the risk of cardiovascular problems. Sleep deprivation raises the odds of suffering a stroke, heart attack and congestive failure while those who oversleep risk angina and coronary artery disease in which the vessels that bring blood and oxygen to the heart muscles get narrow. Factors such as sleeping difficulties, age, cholesterol, smoking and obesity were accounted for but the strong association remained. Prior research has shown that lack of sleep leads to a wide range of problems such as diabetes, inflammation and increases stress hormones and blood pressure.
