The Pill That Pays for Itself

1 Birth Control a Sound Investment

At a juncture when publicly funded contraception for women has become a political issue, a timely new report from the Brookings Institution asserts that family planning support programs save taxpayers from 2 to 6 dollars in government expenses for each dollar invested. The report notes that nearly one-half of all pregnancies in the U.S. are now unintended, and that children born into these circumstances are more likely to experience poverty, fail academically, engage in criminal activity or have physical or mental health problems, all of which run up public health, safety and welfare costs. According to the report, one specific proposal, an expansion of access to Medicaid family planning programs at a cost of $235 million, would save an estimated $1.32 billion.

Cut Fat; Increase Sperm Count

2 Men's Semen Quality Linked to Diet

Fatty foods may result in low sperm quality, says a study that finds that men with a high fat diet had a 40% lower sperm count than men who eat healthier. From 12/06 to 8/10, researchers analyzed sperm samples from 99 men, surveyed eating habits and grouped them accordingly. Men in the group with the highest fat consumption had a 43% lower sperm count and 38% lower sperm concentration than those in the group that ate the least amount of fat. Researchers concluded that saturated fat is largely responsible for low sperm quality whereas men who ate “healthy fat” or omega-3 fatty acids, found in salmon and nuts, for example, had 2% more sperm than those who eschewed omega 3s. The study, led by Jill Attaman, Mass. Gen. and Harvard Med. Schl. is published in the journal Human Reproduction.

Bill Would Require Sex Therapist

3 Ohio Senator Sponsors Viagra Bill

If a new Viagra bill passes, men would need to visit a sex therapist, get a heart test, and a notarized affidavit from a sex partner before being given a prescription for Viagra or any erectile dysfunction medicine. The notarized affidavit from a sex partner would confirm that the patient is experiencing sexual problems. HLNtv says Democratic Ohio state Sen. Nina Turner proposed the Viagra bill, called Senate Bill 307. She said that women aren't going to "take this [recent reproductive legislation] lying down." Turner says she's "just as serious" as the male policymakers who have proposed bills that would "regulate a woman's reproductive health." The Ohio House Bill 125 or "Heartbeat Bill" would make it illegal for women to get an abortion once the fetus heartbeat is detected.

Want Slime with That?

4 USDA: Schools Can Buy Pink Slime or Not

The USDA will allow schools to decide whether to buy ground beef that contains an ammonia-treated filler many critics refer to as "pink slime." The policy affects food at school this fall, reports MSNBC. The "pink slime" filler is a processed ingredient that has been exposed to ammonium hydroxide gas that eliminates bacteria. While the USDA buys around a fifth of the food that's offered at school, individual schools will now have the choice of buying beef with the filler or choosing bulk ground beef that doesn't contain the controversial filler ingredient.

Eat Your Art

5 Playful Plates May Help Kids Eat Veggies

Polish designer Boguslaw Slowinsk created special plates for picky eaters, like kids and maybe even some adults! The plates have a white background and simple black drawings, much like a coloring book, but these plates are waiting to be colored with vegetables! TreeHugger writes that the plates are so much fun that even the most picky diners will want to eat their peas and corn, just to see what's underneath the food. Slowinsk's website features plates with tomato, mushroom, cauliflower and bean hair! Other plates have corn or peas riding on a train or cabbage hitching a ride on a truck.

Testing Every Three Years

6 Pap Smear Guidelines Call for Fewer Tests

Healthy women without unusual symptoms need a Pap smear no more than once every three years, suggests the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. The new guidelines, issued on Wednesday, may seem like a big change to women who've been getting Pap smears each year. The tests have been a regular part annual exams for women for the last 60 years. The new guidelines, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, also call for women to begin screening at age 21 regardless of their sexual past. The task force discourages screening for women under 21 and women over the age of 65. Women over 30 who don't want to have a Pap smear every three years can instead have an HPV test along with a Pap smear every five years, reports New York Times.

New $54 Million Campaign

7 Tips from Former Smokers to Make You Quit

"Tips From Former Smokers," the new $54 million national media campaign from the CDC, was unveiled Thursday. According to CNN, the CDC hopes the new campaign will convince current smokers to quit and prevent others, particularly kids, from starting the habit. The campaign will employ stories and graphic pictures from ex-smokers who suffered severe health problems as a result of their tobacco use. Some of the illnesses highlighted in the campaign include stroke-related paralysis, lung removal, limb amputation and heart attack.

Crosses Blood-Brain Barrier

8 Cancer Drug Improves Memory in Mice with AD

Three months of being treated with a cancer drug that crosses the blood-brain barrier increased learning and memory in older mice that had symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a progressive and incurable form of dementia. The drug, epothilone (EpoD), works by preventing the breakdown of structures called microtubules transport nutrients in neurons, or nerve cells. When tau accumulates in the brain, the microtubules break down and “tangles” develop in the cells. EpoD works like the commonly known chemotherapy drug paclitaxel, but the advantage is its ability to get into the brain where it lasts much longer than it does in the blood. Humans would have to be treated for much longer and future studies will not only have to determine effectiveness, but the safety of using EpoD long term.
