1 Potatoes Top List of Weight-Gain Foods

A massive study by the Harvard School of Public Health has determined that not all calories are equal, and that independent of calorie content, certain foods cause people to gain more weight, or to prevent weight gain, than other, similar foods. Of all the starches, for example, potatoes were singularly fattening, with each additional serving per day adding weight over the course of a year, ranging from a few ounces for baked or boiled potatoes, to over 3/4 of a pound for french fries. By contrast, each extra serving of nuts per day prevented a half a pound worth of weight gain, while yogurt, despite its dairy fat content, reduced weight gain by a quarter pound per year. The study was based on data for 120,877 U.S. adults over 20 years.

2 Infants Most at Risk for Child Abuse

Children under one are most at risk for child abuse, finds a study that surveyed 89% of US hospitals to learn how many children suffered from serious injuries due to abuse. The study looked at the Dept. of Health and Human Services’ 2006 Kids Inpatient Database that tracked patients, ages 18 and under, and their reasons for visiting the hospital. The details: for every 100,000 kids, 6 were seriously abused; the likelihood of abuse increased by more than 8 times for children under one; for every 100,000 infants, 58 were taken to hospitals to be treated for physical abuse. Children on Medicaid were 6 times more likely to be abused. The study, published in the journal Pediatrics, is the first national study to look this deeply into the physical ramifications of child abuse.

3 Facebook Can Be Rough on Mental Health

Facebook users with lots of friends may compare their achievements with others, which may affect mental health, say researchers. Three new studies on Facebook have found that it may be damaging to mental health. Just viewing status updates of others can make Facebook users feel worse! In addition, researchers found that having a lot of friends on Facebook is associated with feeling worse about your own life. MSNBC reports that a common thread running through the studies is that Facebook provides a platform for self-destructive behavior, such as comparing yourself to others or talking about your own weaknesses. While one study on college students found that time spent on Facebook may be linked to depressive symptoms, Facebook doesn't necessarily cause depression.

4 Elderly Green Tea Drinkers Age Better

Elderly adults who regularly drink green tea are less likely to develop functional disability or problems with daily activities as they age finds a new Japanese study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Researchers with Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine followed nearly 14,000 adults aged 65 and older for three years. Those drinking five cups a day or more were more likely to stay agile and independent versus those who consumed less than a cup a day. Antioxidants are suspected to be the beneficial nutrients, as they can help ward off cell damage that leads to disease. But it may not be tea alone, notes study leader Yasutake Tomata. Those drinking green tea also had healthier diets overall and were less inclined to smoke.

Number One for Type 2 Diabetes

5 Metformin Is Type 2 Diabetes Drug of Choice

A new study looking at the different classes of type 2 diabetes medications and their ability to manage the disease and problems associated with it, metformin came out on top. Metformin did the best job of lowering hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) levels which looks at glucose levels over a period of several months, cholesterol, mortality and heart disease. Metformin was more effective when combined with another diabetes drug, does not have as many side effects and is cheaper than other type 2 diabetes drugs. As always, researchers emphasize that medication in conjunction with lifestyle changes such as exercise and adopting a healthy diet will help people better manage diabetes.
