Docs Stress Cessation

1 Many with Cancer Still Smoke After Diagnosis

Many cancer patients continue to smoke after diagnosis finds a new study. Researchers followed 5338 lung and colorectal cancer patients for 5 months and found that, at diagnosis, 39% of lung cancer patients and 14% of colorectal cancer patients were smoking. Five months later, 14% of lung cancer patients and 9% of colorectal patients still smoked. Lung cancer patients who continued to smoke tended to have public health insurance, low emotional support and had smoked a high number of cigarettes at some point. Patients with colorectal cancer who continued to smoke were mostly male, tended to be uninsured and had lower levels of education than those who quit after diagnosis. Experts hope this information will help identify at-risk patients who may need smoking cessation counseling.

When You Can Go Anywhere

2 Hospital Care for the Wealthy

When you think of hospitals, you probably think of sterile environments and bland food, but many hospitals are now focusing on a trend known as hospital tourism and catering to an elite group that believes in living in comfort, even during hospital stays. Usually tucked away from the view of us ‘normals,’ wings dedicated to the wealthy offer vacation-style amenities that include expensive linens, marble countertops, gourmet food, and personal butlers. “It’s not just competing on medical grounds and specialties, but competing for customers who can go just about anywhere,” said Helen K. Cohen, a specialist in health facilities. “These kinds of patients, they’re paying cash — they’re the best kind of patient to have,” she added. “Theoretically, it trickles down.”

Even Churches Must Comply

3 Health Insurance Has to Cover Contraception

The Obama administration has decided that most health insurance plans must cover contraceptives for women free of charge, and it’s a rule that even Catholic hospitals, colleges, and charities must follow, although church-affiliated groups have until August 1, 2013 to comply. Other employers and insurers must be in compliance by August 2012. Senator Richard Blumenthal, Connecticut (D), declares this will “ensure that women have access to full health care services, regardless of their employer, so they can make the best health choices for themselves and their families,” but not everyone is happy. “In effect, the president is saying we have a year to figure out how to violate our consciences,” said Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan, president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Can't Kill Himself

4 Man Wants Legal Right to Be Killed

Tony Nicklinson had it all - a successful career and an active life that included playing rugby, skydiving, and bridge-climbing. Then, seven years ago, he had a stroke that left him paralyzed. Now, he wants to die and he wants Britain’s High Court to declare that any doctor that gives him a lethal injection won’t be charged with murder. The British government's top prosecutor declared in 2009 that anyone who helped terminally ill relatives or friends die were unlikely to be charged if they acted out of compassion but Nicklinson doesn’t want to take any chances. The Ministry of Justice seeks to have the suit dismissed because it would require changing the law, which is something that only Parliament can do.

Move over Espresso

5 Starbucks to Sell Wine, Beer in Atlanta

Some Starbucks stores in Atlanta and Southern California will begin offering wine and beer along with premium foods, such as hot flatbread sandwiches and small plates. The change isn't surprising since Starbucks removed "coffee" from their logo. The menu changes, which will affect four to six stores in Atlanta and the same number in Southern California, will be implemented by the end of 2012. Starbucks also recently announced similar plans for some stores in Chicago. CBS News reports that Starbucks now sells wine and beer in five stores in Seattle and one in Portland, Oregon, but alcoholic beverages aren't served until the afternoon. While the beer and wine lists will vary by region, the offerings at Starbucks in Oregon and Washington state include Stella Artois lager and Dead Guy Ale.

No Fewer Hot Flashes

6 Pomegranate Seed Oil of No Menopause Benefit

Pomegranate Seed Oil is marketed as an alternative remedy for menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes, but a study appearing in the journal Menopause finds that the supplement has no more benefit than a placebo filled with sunflower oil. The study, conducted at the Medical University of Vienna, followed 81 postmenopausal women, all of which who were experiencing a minimum of 5 hot flashes a day. In addition to keeping a journal, the women had their hormone levels tested. The researchers found no difference in the participants’ hormone levels before and after the 12-week treatment. While the women did not benefit from fewer hot flashes, they did report better sleep quality while on pomegranate seed oil versus the placebo.

State Laws Focus on "Risks"

7 Abortion 14 Times Safer Than Giving Birth

Information from government data on live births and deaths due to pregnancy or abortions revealed that abortion was 14 times safer than giving birth which translated into one maternal death out of 11,000 live births compared to one death out of 167,000 legal abortions. Hypertension, urinary tract problems and mental health issues were more prevalent in women who gave birth, while infection was the main, yet very small, risk of having an abortion. Many state laws require that health care providers have to go over a list that emphasizes the risk, some of which are unfounded such as abortion increasing the risk of cancer and include 24 hour wait periods after counseling. Researchers believe laws the guide conversations between women and their providers are inappropriate.
