Keep Your Gallbladder

1 New Treatment to Remove Gallstones

About 10% of the population has suffered from gallstones, growths that may cause excruciating pain. The traditional treatment for gallstones is to surgically remove the gallbladder. Now, a group of scientists has developed a specially designed endoscope that locates and removes gallstones and other gallbladder lesions, while leaving the organ intact. Surgeons use the scope to suck out the gallstones, even small ones embedded in the gallbladder’s lining. Clinical trials showed “no significant difference” in the surgical safety of the new endoscope as compared with the type that’s used to perform cholecystectomies, or removal of the gallbladder. In fact, surgeons say the image quality of the new endoscope is superior to other devices as is its flexibility and reliability.

Not a Death Sentence

2 Paula Deen Has Diabetes

Food Network star Paula Deen has come forward and announced that she has Type 2 diabetes, but she’s not letting the news she received 3 years ago during a routine checkup slow her down. “I’m here today to let the world know that it is not a death sentence,” Deen said during an interview on NBC’s Today show. The celebrity chef also compared Type 2 diabetes to Russian roulette, saying, “It's about heredity. It's about age, lifestyle, race. I'm the only one in my family who has it. My grandmother cooked and ate like I ate, and she didn't have it.” Deen also had something to say about the buttery and deep-fried recipes she shares with others. “Honey I’m your cook, not your doctor. You are going to have to be responsible for yourself.”

Watch Out for the Train

3 It's Dangerous to Walk with Headphones

Serious injuries and deaths are becoming more common among pedestrians using headphones. The number of deaths and serious injuries for the group tripled between 2004 and 2011 in the U.S., say researchers at the University of Maryland. Walking around with headphones can result in sensory deprivation and distraction. The report, published in Injury Prevention, reveals that half of the pedestrians who died while wearing headphones were hit by trains. The other half died after being struck by cars, buses, trucks, tractor trailers or bikes. The reported discussed 116 crashes resulting in 81 deaths. Researchers blame the problem on the increased prevalence of portable electronic gadgets. In other words, MP3 players are more popular than the Walkman, and it's killing some of us!

4 Burger King Delivered to Your Front Door

Burger King is trying out home delivery in the Washington, D.C. area with plans to expand testing to 16 restaurants before February. Orders will be placed online or by phone. If the pilot program is a success, the burger giant may offer home delivery across the nation. Los Angeles Times reports that the burger chain will charge $2 for delivery for a minimum order amount of $8 to $10, depending on the location. For their burger delivery experiment, Burger King is accepting delivery orders from customers within a 10-minute drive of a participating restaurant. Burger King's goal is to deliver within 30 minutes or less. While Burger King delivery is a new idea for Americans, people in several other countries have been taking advantage of Burger King delivery for years.

Chew More but Eat Less

5 Hormone-Based Gum May Suppress Appetite

Researchers at Syracuse University are working on a chewing gum that could suppress the appetite, leading to weight loss. Chemist Robert P. Doyle has been focused on a particular hormone called human peptide YY or hPYY which is released from cells in the intestinal lining when one eats or exercises. The hormone then travels to the hypothalamus in the brain to help regulate hunger and thirst. Previous studies show that injections of the hormone can suppress appetite, in one study consuming about 30 percent fewer calories than usual. Doyle notes that because there are PYY receptors in the tongue, a chewing gum laced with human peptide YY could promote feelings of satiety. Doyle hopes to get his work into a clinical trial where it will help patients with a medical need to lose weight.

Helps in Early and Late Stages

6 Herceptin and Tykerb Shrink Breast Cancers

Results from research conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston shows that treating women with early stage HER2 positive breast cancer with Tykerb and Herceptin shrink the tumors and prevents it from advancing better than using only one of these drugs. One in five breast cancer tumors has this receptor, which are aggressive and grow fast. They are commonly used to treat late stage breast cancer prior to surgery but these results show that they also can be used in women with early stage breast cancer pre-operatively. This study did not show an increased survival rate, but studies that follow women who have had combination treatment and then surgery will be done to determine that. The complete study has been published in both the Lancet and Lancet Oncology.
