1 Fish Oil Could Lead to Leukemia Cure

A compound in fish and fish oil that kills leukemia cells may lead to a cure, say Penn State researchers. The compound is produced from an Omega-3 fatty acid and findings indicate it has “the ability to selectively kill the leukemia-causing stem cells in mice," says researcher Sandeep Prabhu. It does this by activating a gene in the leukemia cell that programs the cell’s own death. Current treatments do not kill leukemia stem cells. Instead, medications keep the number of cells low but if the patient stops taking them, the disease relapses. For the experiment, mice were injected with the compound each day for a week. Follow-up tests showed normal blood counts and normal sized spleens. "The important thing is that the mice were completely cured of leukemia with no relapse."

2 MRI Scan May Be Better for Heart Patients

A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan may be a good alternative to angiogram and SPECT for diagnosing coronary heart disease, say British researchers from the University of Leeds. The most commonly used methods for diagnosing suspected heart disease are currently an angiogram, an invasive procedure involving dye injection into heart arteries, and a non-invasive imaging test known as SPECT. Both tests involve ionizing radiation, but MRI doesn't. The five-year study, published in Lancet, found that MRI is a reliable way to detect signs of significant coronary heart disease. The research also showed that MRI is better than SPECT for finding coronary heart disease and for ruling out heart disease in healthy patients.

Injectable Form Failed

3 Sublingual Universal Flu Vaccine Developed

The newest research to come out of the International Vaccine Institute has found that an influenza vaccine that targets the matrix protein 2 (M2) is highly effective in protecting mice against a wide array of viruses when given sublingually. Previous experiments in which the vaccine was injected failed to generate an immune response in the lungs as opposed to placing it under the tongue. Flu vaccines have traditionally been designed to help the immune system create antibodies against hemagglutinin (HA), but this area of the virus mutates frequently. This is why a new vaccine has to be developed annually but targeting the M2 antigen, highly conserved between the various strains, could put an end to that.
