Higher Pregnancy Rates

1 Abstinence-Only Sex Education Doesn’t Work

States with abstinence-only sex ed programs have higher teen pregnancy rates than those with comprehensive sex ed, says a U of GA study. Researchers studied teen pregnancy and birth data from 48 states to learn the value of public school sex ed programs and found that abstinence-only programs “may even contribute to the high teen pregnancy rates in the U.S. ...,” says author David Hall. Even when socioeconomic status, education level and other factors that can impact teen pregnancy were considered, the data was undeniable. As state legislators decide policy, those for abstinence-only education “need to ask themselves: If teens don't learn about human reproduction, including safe sexual health practices ... in school, then when should they learn it and from whom?" ask researchers.

Welch's in Level of Concern

2 Apple Juice: Higher Arsenic Levels Than Tap

Some apple and grape juices have higher arsenic levels than the threshold set for tap or bottled water, says Consumer Reports. The magazine studied 88 samples of fruit juice, and found that 10 percent had higher levels of arsenic than allowed in water. Mott's, Welch's, Walgreens and Walmart juices all had levels higher than 10 parts per billion (ppb) of arsenic. Ten ppb is the federal threshold for levels of arsenic in tap or bottled water. Consumer Reports also found that 25 percent of the samples, including Gerber, Minute Maid and Trader Joe's, had more than 5 ppb of lead. The FDA standard for lead in bottled water is 5 ppb. CNN reports that the levels of arsenic and lead found in the juices are within the FDA's "level of concern," which is 23 ppb of arsenic and 50 ppb of lead.

Tumors Can Be Their Own Enemy

3 Factors in Tumors Can Slow Their Spread

New research has discovered that certain forms of the amino acid tyrosine present in tumors have properties that slow down metastasis. Local tumors can usually be removed through surgery, but metastasis is difficult to manage and the main reason cancer patients die. They identified two forms of tyrosine, meta- and ortho-tyrosine, and observed that when they were present, they slowed down metastasis. The phenomenon of a tumor preventing itself from metastasizing is called “concomitant tumor resistance.” Researchers have also found that both forms of the amino acid act to inhibit metastasis at very low concentrations, can be found naturally in the patient and are safe. They hope to be able to use this knowledge to better manage cancer.
