150 Minutes Per Week

1 Exercise for Better Sleep

People who participate in 150 minutes per week of moderate to intense physical activity sleep better and are more alert during the day, says a new study of a nationally representative sample of more than 2600 men and women, ages 18-85. It’s estimated that, among US adults, 30 to 40% have sleep issues or feel sleepy during the day. "Increasingly, the scientific evidence is encouraging as regular physical activity may serve as a non-pharmaceutical alternative to improve sleep,” says study author Brad Cardinal, Oregon State U. Researchers, who controlled for age, BMI, smoking and depression status and general health, concluded that the risk of feeling sleepy during the day decreased by 65% for those meeting physical activity guidelines.

2 Dangerous Toys on Store Shelves

Dangerous toys remain on store shelves, say consumer watchdogs who created the "Trouble in Toyland" report. The U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) says the dangers include lead, choking hazards and toxic chemicals. They also warn that some toys are so loud that they could cause hearing damage. The full report is available at uspirg.org. Nine toys were listed as potentially toxic for lead or phthalates, including the Tinkerbell watch, Disney Fairies, which contained high levels of lead. Twelve toys were listed as choking hazards, including an Oscar doll made by Sesame Workshop. Elmo's World talking cell phone was one of three toys called out for posing noise hazards.

3 Lots of Coffee Lowers Uterine Cancer Risk

Results from a new study by Harvard School of Public Health involving over 67,000 female nurses showed the drinking at least four cups of coffee lower their risk of endometrial cancer by 25 percent. This was large cohort that was followed for 26 years and only one percent (672 women) developed the cancer that affects lining of the uterus. While there is no definitive link between coffee and a lower cancer risk, other factors such as weight, childbirth or hormone use had no effect. Two factors the increase the risk of endometrial cancer are elevated circulating estrogen and insulin levels. It is also important to note that the reduced risk was not significant in women who used decaf, but the number of women in this group was so small that making a strong correlation difficult.
