Would You Love Stale Popcorn?

1 Switch Hands to Eat Less

Using your nondominant hand while snacking could lead to eating less, claim researchers who believe that the ease of automatic eating is interrupted when using a hand that's not dominant. Published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, people who snacked with a nondominant hand reduced total intake by around 30 percent compared with those using a dominant hand. In one experiment, popcorn lovers ate the same amount of popcorn regardless of whether the popcorn was fresh or stale, but those who didn't typically eat popcorn ate much less stale popcorn than fresh. In another experiment, people were asked to eat popcorn at a theater using either their dominant or nondominant hands. Popcorn lovers who ate with their nondominant hands consumed less stale popcorn than fresh.

Antigen-Specific T Cells Created

2 Stem Cells Used in Cancer Immunotherapy

By injecting DNA into induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, researchers at Penn State College of Medicine were able to convert them into antigen-specific T cells which kept 100 percent of mice with tumors alive compared to 55 percent who got the control treatment. Cancer cells are able to grow because the antigen-specific T cells are not there to kill them. Two challenges of this cancer immunotherapy technique are the six week time period that is required to convert the iPS cells into T cells and the possibility that the cells may morph and cause health problems. The next step is to try this technique in human iPS cells. The complete study can be found in the recent issue of Cancer Research.
