Education May Impact Insomnia

1 Insomnia Costs $63.2 Billion a Year

The total yearly cost of insomnia in the U.S. is $63.2 billion in lost productivity, find researchers. The average worker in the U.S. loses 11.3 days or $2,280 each year to insomnia. The study, published in the journal Sleep, includes a national sampling of more than 7,000 workers. The insomnia rate among workers 65 and older was just 14 percent, while working women suffered a much higher rate, 27.1 percent. The study, which is part of the larger American Insomnia Study, also found a lower than average insomnia rate among participants with less than a high school education, 19.9 percent. The insomnia rate among college graduates was 21.5 percent, while people with a high school education and some college had greater than 25 percent insomnia rates.

Could Deliver Anticancer Drugs

2 Modified Vaccinia Virus Targets Cancer Cells

Scientists in Canada have modified the vaccinia virus, which is used to make the smallpox vaccine, so it can only replicate in cancer cells that use a common chemical pathway. In order to determine the safety of the virus called JX-594, 23 patients with advanced cancer were administered the virus intravenously at different doses. Scientists observed that in seven of the eight patients who got the highest dose, JX-594 only replicated in the tumors, something scientists had never been able to do before. Tumor growth was halted in six patients and no one was cured which was expected since everyone got only one dose. In addition to directly attacking cancer cells, researchers believe viruses could be used to get anticancer drugs to tumors.
