1 Pre-Diabetes Risk Lowered by More Muscle Mass

The greater a person’s muscle mass, the lower the risk of insulin resistance, a precursor to diabetes, finds a new study. Previous studies have correlated low muscle mass with insulin resistance but this is the first to examine whether increased muscle mass would improve blood glucose regulation. "Our findings represent a departure from the usual focus of clinicians, and their patients, on just losing weight to improve metabolic health," says Preethi Srikanthan, MD, UCLA who says muscle mass and not just BMI should be considered for at-risk individuals. “This is a welcome message for many overweight patients who experience difficulty in achieving weight loss, as any effort to get moving and keep fit should be seen as laudable and contributing to metabolic change."

Girls at the Grill

2 Women Should Grill Too

Elizabeth Karmel, creator of the group Girls at the Grill, is discouraging the gender stereotype of women cooking and men grilling. The tagline for Girls at the Grill is "If you can grill it, you can eat it." Profiled recently by CNN, Karmel offers several reasons that girls should grill. Karmel, the Executive Chef of Hill Country Barbecue Market and Hill Country Chicken, thinks that women should grill for the fun of it, and for the great taste that grilling food brings. In addition, Karmel says that women should grill for the easy clean-up and relaxing outdoor setting. Karmel also notes that grilling intensifies the inherent flavors in food, leaving little reason to add oil or heavy sauce. Finally, Karmel thinks women should grill more because "a cook-out is always a party."

3 Yoga Relieves Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

Two 75 minute yoga sessions per week for eight weeks alleviated the chronic pain and mental stress that afflicts women with fibromyalgia according to a new study published in the Journal of Pain Research. Women with fibromyalgia suffer from chronic fatigue and pain, muscle stiffness, sleeping difficulties and depression. Previous studies have found women with the condition tend to have lower than normal cortisol levels which can increase pain, fatigue and stress sensitivity. Saliva samples taken from the women who practiced yoga found that their cortisol levels went up which correlated with the women reporting less pain and feeling better mentally. Other research has shown that a type of meditation called focused attention sends signals to the brain that relieve pain.
