AMA Blasts Practice of Competitive Eating

July 4 is around the corner - and that means it’s time for competitive eating contests, where contestants try to down as many hotdogs in a specific period of time as is humanly possible. Recently, delegates to the American Medical Assn. approved a resolution that recognizes “competitive speed eating as an unhealthy eating practice with potential adverse consequences.” Background info supplied to AMA voters said that competitive speed eating “condones excessive consumption, junk food consumption and a waste of resources that could be used to fight hunger.” To date, there’s been no response from Major League Eating, the organization that “oversees all professional eating contests,” including the upcoming Nathan's Famous July 4 Int’l. Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island.
