1 Protein Drinks After Aerobics Slow Aging

Protein drinks after aerobics help slow the aging process by maximizing exercise's effects and building muscle. "It is not a mystery that exercise and nutrition help slow the aging process," said researcher Benjamin F. Miller, Ph.D. about a study that involved 16 participants, ages 37 and older, who exercised on treadmills for 45 minutes, three times/week. After each session, one group was given a protein drink; the other was given a carbohydrate drink. After six weeks, scientists were able to determine that proteins taken after exercise keep muscles strong and fit. "If you want to age gracefully, this study shows that proteins taken after exercise keep your muscles strong and fit," Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Ed.-in-Chief, FASEB Journal in which the study appears.

2 Replace Food Guide Pyramid with New Symbol

The New York Times reports “Goodbye Food Pyramid, Hello Dinner Plate.” The long-used symbol for how to create a healthy diet will be replaced with something more familiar and hopefully easier to understand. A circular plate-shaped symbol will be used and sliced into wedges to represent the basic food groups – fruits, vegetables, grains, and protein. Beside the plate will be a smaller circle for dairy. Half of the plate will be filled with plant-based foods, reminding Americans to eat their fruits and veggies. The new plate is expected to be a crucial element to the Obama administrations crusade against obesity. Dr. David Kessler, former commissioner of the FDA, calls the plate a “major improvement over the pyramid.”

3 Form of LDL Cholesterol Stickier Than Normal

A study conducted in Britain has discovered that a form of cholesterol called MGmin-low-density lipoprotein (LDL) tends to stick to arterial walls better than LDL resulting in fatty plaques that build up and narrow the arteries leading to coronary heart disease. Human MGmin-LDL was synthesized in the lab and its behavior with other molecules was observed. It is formed by glycation in which a sugar group attaches to the LDL and more common in the elderly and type 2 diabetics. The LDL becomes smaller and denser and stickier regions are exposed. Previous research has found that metformin which lowers blood sugar also prevents glycation of LDL, which may explain why it lowers the risk of heart disease. Finding treatments that attack this type of cholesterol is the researchers’ next goal.
