1 Majority of Young Indoor Tanners Ignore Risks

The overwhelming majority - 86% - of teens or young adults who tan indoors know the risks yet choose to ignore them, finds a new survey of more than 3800 white teens and young adults. 87% of those who tan indoors said they think a tan makes them more attractive. "It's absurd that many people who indoor tan are doing it for cosmetic reasons because that tan can actually accelerate the aging process and can lead to melanoma — the deadliest form of skin cancer," said Dr. Ronald Moy, president, Am. Academy of Dermatology who warns that “if this behavior trend continues and young women’s attitudes toward tanning do not change, future generations will develop more skin cancers earlier in life and the consequences can be fatal."

2 Coffee Could Reduce Prostate Cancer Risk

Men who consume around six cups or more of regular or decaf coffee daily may have a 60 percent reduced risk of developing lethal prostate cancer, plus a 20 percent lower risk of any form of prostate cancer, say researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health. Men may not have to drink six cups of coffee to benefit. MSNBC reports that the study found that drinking up to three cups of coffee daily was associated with a 30 percent reduced risk of lethal prostate cancer. Since even decaf coffee reduced prostate cancer risk, it's not likely that the secret is in the caffeine. Researchers think that the protective benefit of coffee is probably linked with compounds that act as antioxidants, reducing inflammation and regulating insulin.

3 Selenium May Slightly Lower Cholesterol

High doses of the mineral selenium may help to slightly lower cholesterol levels according to research conducted by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. A study of 500 UK adults found that those taking 100 and 200 micrograms of selenium daily (the RDA for US adults is set at 55 micrograms by the Institute of Medicine) helped to lower total cholesterol by an average of 8.5 mg/dL and 9.7 mg/dL respectively compared to a group taking a placebo. But taking supplements is still not recommended due to the possible risks, such as an increase in diabetes. Americans get plenty of selenium in their daily diet, as foods such as meat, bread and some nuts are rich in the mineral. The study is published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

One Gene Controls Many in Fat

4 “Master Switch” Obesity Gene Discovered

British scientists have discovered a gene that acts as a “master switch” in adipose tissue. The gene, KLF14 was previously shown to be associated with type 2 diabetes and cholesterol levels. Genetic analysis of 200,000 genes in subcutaneous fat from 800 British female twins found that the KLF gene controlled the expression of genes within the sample involved in body mass index, cholesterol, insulin and blood sugar levels. Stressing the importance of KLF14’s role, researcher Mark McCarthy noted that it acted “. . . as a master switch controlling processes that connect changes in the behavior of subcutaneous fat to disturbances in muscle and liver. . ." Researchers hope that understanding KLF14’s role in obesity will help them to develop better anti-obesity treatments.
