It's Official, Again

1 Obama Releases Long Form Birth Certificate

President Barack Obama released a detailed Hawaii birth certificate today, saying "We do not have time for this kind of silliness." In order to obtain the long form birth certificate, Obama's lawyers had to apply for a special waiver from the state of Hawaii, which normally only releases the standard shorter form that Obama had shared in 2008. Obama called on Americans and the media to move on from the birth certificate sideshow and focus on more important issues facing America. Meanwhile, Donald Trump took credit for getting Obama to act. MSNBC reports that Trump said, "He should have done it a long time ago. I am really honored to play such a big role in hopefully, hopefully getting rid of this issue."

It's Not About the Money

2 Movie Stars Help Unravel Marriage Mysteries

Marriages between the stars may help explain the reasons that people marry partners with similar education levels, find researchers from Denmark. The study, published in Journal of Human Capital, reveals that movie stars who say "I do" together tend to have similar educational backgrounds, but there's not a correlation between a star's formal education and their success in box office earnings or likelihood of winning an Oscar. Researchers also found that actors aren't likely to be cast together in movies due to their educational levels or to meet their spouses in school. Study author Gustaf Bruze says that the findings show that "... men and women have very strong preferences for nonfinancial partner traits correlated with education."

Dirtiest U.S. Air Crown Goes To

3 Worst Air to Breathe in U.S. in California

Los Angeles, Calif., no longer wears the ugly crown of worst air in the U.S., but the honor goes to another California town, Bakersfield. The American Lung Association has released their annual ranking of areas in the U.S. with the least and worst air pollution. WebMD reports that Honolulu and Santa Fe, N.M. are the only cities ranking in the top 10 cleanest cities on all three lists: most bouts of short-term particle pollution, most year-round particle pollution, and ozone pollution. Bakersfield was in first place on both lists for particle pollution, but Los Angeles remains the worst for ozone pollution. Living in an area with air pollution is believed to shorten life expectancy.

Don't Touch the Armadillo

4 Armadillos Can Pass Leprosy to Humans

While there have been anecdotal reports of humans developing leprosy after gardening in soil where armadillos burrow, or handling or eating them, experts now have some confirmation that armadillos can pass leprosy to humans. Researchers reporting in the New England Journal of Medicine say that of the 50 patients and 33 wild armadillos studied, 25 patients and 28 armadillos had genetically identical strains of leprosy bacteria. Eight of the patients had contact with armadillos. Researchers say that while it's difficult to establish a causal relationship, the odds that the humans with the armadillo-specific strain were infected by another means is about 1 in 10,000. About 150 people in the U.S. develop leprosy each year, but most are infected from traveling to areas such as Africa or Asia.

Burger, Fries No Longer King

5 Starbucks Now Number Three Chain

Starbucks has become American's third-largest restaurant chain in domestic sales, beating out Burger King and Wendy's. The largest restaurant chain for domestic sales is McDonald's, followed by Subway. USA Today reports that Subway and Starbucks represent striking changes on the top of the restaurant list. For decades, chains selling burgers and fries dominated the top three positions. The healthy eating trend isn't just about fewer calories. Vice president of food at Starbucks, Sandra Starks, says that the coffee chain was among the first to take all artificial ingredients out of its food.

Nutrient Prevents Cell Death

6 Vegetables May Protect from Deadly Skin Cancer

Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and Brussels sprouts have long been studied for their protective nutrients, especially in the fight against many cancers. Penn State researchers have identified a compound that may help increase sunscreens’ ability to prevent deadly melanoma formation. Isothiocyantes, the antioxidant found in cruciferous vegetables, is an inhibitor of a protein called Akt3 which plays a role in 70 percent of melanomas. Because the naturally-occurring isothiocyantes is not strong enough, researchers have developed a more potent version they call ISC-4 which could reduce tumor expansion in lab-generated skin by 80 to 90 percent and decreases tumor development in mice skin by about 80 percent.

Unanimous Vote by Committee

7 Boceprevir Recommended for FDA Approval

A unanimous vote by a U.S. government advisory committee has pushed the FDA approval of the new hepatitis C drug boceprevir closer. Based on results of clinical trials, the committee agreed 18-0 that is was for “. . .treatment of patients with chronic hepatitis C genotype 1 in combination with pegylated interferon and ribavirin." Pegylated interferon and ribavirin are older hepatitis C drugs and studies have shown that using them in combination with boceprevir increases the cure rate and reduces the time in which patients are cured. There is no vaccine so scientists are excited by these results and believe it will help improve the outcome of individuals infected with the blood-borne virus that can ultimately lead to liver failure and is the main reason people need a liver transplant.

Occurs Worldwide

8 Harmless Mercury Becomes Toxic in the Ocean

Researchers tested water in the Arctic Ocean for two years and found that inorganic mercury which is released into the environment from burning coal is converted into a toxic form of mercury. It becomes monomethylmercury, a potent neurotoxin by a process called methylation. Monomethylmercury is ingested by sea creatures at the bottom of the food chain and is accumulated in those at the top, meaning they contain the highest concentrations of this toxic form of mercury. That process is known as bioaccumulation. The biggest concern is that ultimately humans are at the top of the food chain and therefore are exposed to the highest levels. Researchers believe that bacteria methylate the inorganic mercury and that this occurs worldwide.

Surgery Changes Metabolism

9 Gastric Bypass Better Than Dieting for Diabetes

Researchers are investigating why gastric bypass surgery, in which the stomach is surgically reduced, is more likely to eliminate type 2 diabetes than dieting alone. Very obese patients either had Roux-en-Y, a type of gastric bypass surgery or were put on a strict diet. People in both groups lost 20 pounds but the surgery group had lower blood levels of circulating branch chain amino acids which reflect chemical byproducts or metabolites of food and are associated with obesity, diabetes and insulin resistance. Researchers are not sure if the Lap-Band would yield the same results but they want to understand the mechanism of how gastric bypass eliminates diabetes so they can develop drugs that work in the same way.

Fats Promote Inflammation

10 Saturated Fats and Diabetes Link Explained

Research conducted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine investigated how a diet high in saturated fat increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. They observed that saturated fatty acids stimulate immune cells to produce a cytokine called interleukin-1beta which promotes inflammation. Both interleukin-1beta production and fatty acid metabolism are regulated by the same pathway. Interleukin-1beta impairs muscle, liver and fat to tissue ability to respond to insulin which allows the tissues to take up glucose from the blood. The inability of tissues to do that is called insulin resistance and causes type 2 diabetes symptoms. Type 2 diabetics are usually obese as well. Unsaturated fats do not have the same effect.
