Honey Bun or 22 Strips Bacon?

1 Poor Choices in Breakfast Foods at Grocery

The worst breakfast foods at the supermarket include some brand names you know like Kashi and Jimmy Dean. According to Today, the Jimmy Dean Breakfast Bowls: Pancakes and Syrup and Sausage Links has the calorie equivalent of 12 Dunkin' Donuts Sugared Munchkins! The breakfast bowl has 710 calories, so Today suggests substituting the Jimmy Dean D-lights Turkey Sausage Bowl with only 230 calories. One cup of Kashi Summer Berry Granola with a half cup of 2 percent milk has 505 calories, the equivalent of 17 Nabisco Ginger Snap Cookies. The recommended substitute is Kashi GoLean Original with only 205 calories. The worst baked good is Entenmanns’s Single Serve Iced Honey Bun with 660 calories, the equivalent of 22 strips of bacon! Instead, try Entenmann’s Plain Donut at 190 calories.

Too Many Pellets to Count

2 Rodent Feces by Food Prep on Delta Plane

Inside a Delta plane, too many excrement pellets to count were found in three areas of ceiling panels directly over the location where food and drinks are stored, says the FDA. Urine was found in six areas. The inspection took place between January 26 and February 2 at a Delta hangar close to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, reports MSNBC. The findings were described by John Gridley, the district director of the FDA's Atlanta office. He also reports up to 11 rodent pellets above the right door of the forward gallery where food is prepped. Another 10 to 20 pellets were found above the left door panel where food is prepared. Around 15 pellets were discovered on the right aisle above seats C3-C7. The animal was captured while the jet was grounded.

Woman Stung 300 Times

3 Two Killed Trying to Remove Bees from Fireplace

An elderly couple in Texas died after attempting to remove bees from their fireplace in a remote area outside Hebbronvile, Texas, reports CNN. Myrtle Steele, 92, and William Steele, 90, died on Tuesday. The insects had built a hive inside the fireplace of the home, located on a ranch about 100 miles west of Corpus Christi. According to the couple's daughter-in-law, the bees attacked after they were sprayed. The couple's son, Richard Steele, was able to escape and go for help, but his mother was stung more than 300 times. The bee species has not yet been identified, and the hive remains in the house.

Hydrocodone and Zocor Top List

4 10 Drugs Prescribed Most Often

Patients in the U.S. are prescribed generic drugs more often, finds the IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics, a firm that reported the 10 most prescribed drugs of 2010. IMS found that 78 percent of the almost 4 billion prescriptions written in 2010 were for generics. At the top of the list were hydrocodone combined with acetaminophen at 131.2 million prescriptions and generic Zocor (simvastatin), prescribed 94.1 million times. Other heavily prescribed drugs include lisinopril for lowering blood pressure and generic Synthroid (levothyroxine sodium), a snythetic thyroid hormone. WebMD reports that other drugs in the list include generic Norvasc (amlodipine besylate), generic Prilosec (omeprazole), azithromycin, amoxicillin, generic Glucophage (metformin), and hydrochlorothiazide.

Not Just for Depression

5 Antidepressants May Assist Brain Injury Healing

Antidepressants may help promote brain cell growth after brain trauma, suggest researchers from University of Rochester Medical Center. The study involving mice revealed that injured mice given the antidepressant Tofranil (imipramine) had 70 percent more brain cells four weeks after injury compared with mice not given antidepressants. Study findings, published in Journal of Neurotrauma, suggest that giving patients antidepressants immediately after brain injury with other treatments could improve cognitive function, including memory skills.

Based on Extensive Research

6 Food Shows to Replace Afternoon Soap Operas

The cancellations of “All My Children” and “One Life to Live” have left many devoted soap opera fans in grieving. But for those who love talk shows about food and health, ABC has good news. Chefs Mario Batali and Michael Symon (Iron Chef America) will be among a rotating cast who will host “The Chew”, a one-hour food-related talk show which will explore health, family rituals, breaking news, weight loss and other food trends. In addition, ABC plans to debut a comprehensive health and lifestyle show called “The Revolution” which will cover relationships, family, food, style, home design and finance. The decision to replace the soaps with lifestyle talk shows is based on extensive research into what daytime viewers want, says ABC. Both shows will debut this fall and winter.

Denial Leads to Inaction

7 Many Obese Adults Don’t Believe They Have Problem

Nearly 70 percent of Americans are classified as either overweight or obese, but Duke University researchers have found that 1 in 4 of those people do not believe that they have a weight problem. As a result, they did not see a need to take on efforts to improve their health. Men were more likely than women to be in denial of their weight issues in a study that used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted by the CDC. African-Americans were more likely than whites to misperceive their weight and were particularly less likely to try to lose weight. “It’s often said that the first step in improving a problem is believing you have one,” said senior author Gary Bennett. “That’s particularly true for obesity.”

What's Your Gut Type?

8 Three Different "Gut Types" Established

Researchers have found three different “gut types” or enterotypes that people can have. The three types-bacteroides, prevotella and ruminococcus-are found in people all over the world and are not linked to race, country of origin, diet, age or health status. Some strains were closely linked to obesity and direct correlation between a bacteria’s efficiency in obtain energy from food and body mass index was observed which may explain why some people have more difficulty losing weight than others. Researchers believe this may help in screening people who may be at a higher risk of intestinal diseases and individualize their treatment. One thousand species make up the approximately 100 trillion bacteria that breakdown food into energy and protect us from disease-causing agents.

9 Calcium Increases Heart Disease Risk in Women

Women taking calcium to maintain bone strength may be increasing their risk of cardiovascular disease according to results from a new study. The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) found no link but the results were confounded because over 50 percent were taking calcium supplements in addition to what they took in the trial. Some of the 16,718 women from that study who had not taken calcium previously took calcium and vitamin D which increased their risk of a heart attack by 13 to 22 percent compared to the control group. Thirteen set of data from unpublished studies added weight to these results, elevating the risk of heart attack by 25 to 30 percent and revealed a 15 to 20 percent greater stroke risk. Based on these results, final recommendations cannot be made at this point.

Major Challenge in Treatment

10 HIV Drug Resistance More Prevalent in Kids

Resistance to three HIV drugs occurs in about 12 percent of HIV-positive kids within 5 years of beginning treatment and is greater in kids who are treated when older. Over 1,000 European-born kids under 16 years old who were infected with HIV by their mothers and received at least three drugs between 1998 and 2008 were part of the study. HIV is managed with different classes of drugs that work by keeping the viral load low. The drug failure rate in kids is greater than it is in adults and is presenting a major challenge in treating kids with HIV. One hypothesis for the higher failure rate is that bad-tasting medications decrease the chance the child will take the drugs like they should so there is not a continuous level of three drugs in their system for years as there should be.

Seasonal Baby Blues

11 Fall and Winter Births Raise Postpartum Depression

A study out of Sweden suggests that giving birth in fall and winter raise the risk for developing postpartum depression. Over 2,000 women who gave birth over a 12 month period were asked about symptoms of depression and other factors at three different times: 5 days, 6 weeks and 6 months postpartum. Results quickly revealed that postpartum length and the season they had their babies were factors. Giving birth in October through December doubled the likelihood of postpartum depression 6 weeks and 6 months after giving birth compared to women who had babies in April through June. One theory is that hormones fluctuate throughout the year. Also the lack of sunlight in winter which is very prominent in Sweden because it is so far from the equator may affect mood.

Organophosphates Suspect

12 Low IQ Associated with Prenatal Pesticide Exposure

Three studies in the U.S., all about 10 years long, suggest that children exposed to pesticides while in the womb may have lower IQs. One in California tested 392 kids and found that a tenfold increase in organophosphate levels in pregnant woman lowered the IQ in seven year olds by 5.5 points. One of the two studies done in New York looked at organophosphates in 400 women and their six to nine year old kids found that exposure impaired perceptual reasoning and non-verbal problem solving skills. About 33 percent of the moms with affected kids had a genetic variant the lowered their ability to breakdown pesticides. The other involving 265 minority kids exposed to a cockroach pesticide before it was banned linked lower working memories and IQ to higher levels of exposure.
