Social Support for Suicide Prevention LGB Youth

Lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) youth are less likely to attempt suicide when living in supportive environments, say researchers. "When communities support their gay young people, and schools adopt anti-bullying and anti-discrimination policies that specifically protect lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth, the risk of attempted suicide by all young people drops, especially for LGB youth," says Mark L. Hatzenbuehler of Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. The study findings, published in Pediatrics, reveal that LGB youth were 25 percent less likely to commit suicide when living in a social environment that's supportive of gays and lesbians, compared to environments that are less supportive.
