Good Call or Nanny State?

1 Boston Bans Sugary Drinks from City Properties

Boston’s mayor Thomas M. Menino expanded a ban on the sale of sugary drinks to include all city properties and functions. Already ousted from city schools, soft drinks, juices with added sugar and sports drink will be banned from city-run vending machines and concession stands. Menino, who has had weight problems, says he wants to help overweight Bostonians make healthier food choices. Barbara Ferrer, Boston Public Health Comm., says the new city policy will lower health care costs and raise worker productivity. City departments have six months to institute the ban which sets color-coded standards for what is considered a healthy drink vs what is not. Detractors, who include some independent contractors, say the ban is not only confusing, it will deeply cut into their businesses.

Food, Drug Inspections Delayed

2 How Government Shutdown Would Limit FDA

If the government shuts down, the FDA's ability to conduct food and drug inspections will be severely restricted, but furloughed FDA staff would be able to go back to work in the event of an emergency, such as a food-borne illness outbreak. CNN reports that the FDA's monitoring of radiation in food from Japan would continue during a possible government shutdown. Other inspections during a shutdown would be prioritized by risk, giving more attention to plants with a history of serious safety concerns. If a shutdown does occur, the FDA wouldn't be able to conduct inspections required when a manufacturer files for a new product application. However, the Center for Tobacco Products, funded by the tobacco industry, would remain fully staffed.

Green Facilities Promote Healing

3 LEED for Healthcare Announced

At the CleanMed conference today, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) introduced their LEED for Healthcare system, which guides the design and construction of new buildings and major renovations of existing buildings. LEED for Healthcare, created to serve the special needs of a 24-hour operational facility, can be used at many healthcare settings: inpatient, outpatient, medical offices and assisted living facilities, as well as research centers and medical education centers. "Research has shown that when we are treated and heal in a green healthcare facility – one that has a healthy indoor environmental quality and connects us to the outdoors – we heal faster, have shorter hospital stays and fewer return visits," said Scot Horst, Senior Vice President of LEED, USGBC.

Alcohol Linked with Cancer

5 Exceeding Drinking Limit Increases Cancer Risk

Risk for some cancers is greatly increased by drinking more than a pint of beer a day, finds a study of Europeans. The findings, reported in the British Medical Journal, reveal that one in 10 of all cancers in men were caused by current or past alcohol intake. For women, one in 33 cancers were caused by alcohol. Among alcohol-related cancers, more than 18 percent in men and about 4 percent in women were linked with excessive drinking. BBC reports that men who drank more than two standard drinks a day and women who consumed more than one were at risk for alcohol-related cancers. Standard drinks are defined as 12 grams of alcohol, equivalent to a half pint of beer or 125 ml of wine.

Geologist or Rocks Rock

6 Scouts Getting Stereotypical Gender Messages

Manuals and badges for the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts promote stereotypical ideas about femininity and masculinity, says sociology graduate student Kathleen Denny of the University of Maryland, College Park. Her research findings are published in Gender & Society. The research shows that Boy Scouts are more likely to receive badges with career-oriented language, while girls sometimes receive badges with playful wording. "When boys speak to others about their Geologist badge, they have a legitimate career title to use and are likely to be taken more seriously in conversations than girls discussing their achievement of a 'Rocks Rock' badge," Denny says. Girl Scouts are more likely to be offered art projects and steered away from scientific pursuits, while boys are discouraged from art.

See the Vegetables?

7 Going Vegetarian May Reduce Risk of Cataracts

A long term study on eating habits revealed that vegetarians lower their risk of cataracts by as much as 30 to 40 percent. Over 27,600 people in Britain filled out questionnaires between 1993 and 1999 about diet and tracked their health by examining their medical records between 2008 and 2009 and noted that 1500 people developed cataracts during that time. They noted that three in 50 meat eaters developed cataracts while two in 50 vegetarians did. This study is not saying a vegetarian diet prevents cataracts and eating meat causes them. Other habits that lower the risk of cataracts may be more prevalent among vegetarians than their fellow meat eaters. Cataracts cloud up the lens of the eye and make vision blurry and more than 50 percent of people in the U.S. develop them by age 80.

Pick an NSAID, Any NSAID

8 Multiple NSAIDS Lower Colorectal Cancer Risk

A large study of the 19 different non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) involving over 300,000 people found they all decreased the risk of colorectal cancer. Taking NSAIDs everyday decreased the risk of colon cancer by 28 percent but monthly use cut the reduced risk in half. People with family members who had it lowered their risk by 28 percent when they took an NSAID every day, but only by 11 percent when taken weekly. Aspirin reduced the risk of rectal cancer by 62 percent but did not affect the risk of developing colon cancer while non-aspirin NDSAIDs lowered the risk of colon cancer by 56 percent but did not lower rectal cancer risk. There were several limitations to the study and researchers want to understand which types of colon cancer will benefit the most from aspirin.

Turns on Good and Bad Genes

9 Omega-3 Fatty Acids Potentiate Tamoxifen in Rats

An eight-week study of mammary tumors in rats who ate a diet of 17 percent fish oil plus or minus tamoxifen or 20 percent fish oil plus or minus tamoxifen showed omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil increase the expression of genes that promote differentiation that causes cells to mature and have a specific function which is lost in cancer. It lowered the expression of genes that promote tumor growth and metastasis and increased linked to immune system’s ability to fight tumors. Omega-3s also induced genes related to inflammation and allergic responses which may eliminate the cancer-fighting benefits. These results warrant further investigation and researchers want animal studies to see if omega-3s prevent the development of breast cancer and their role in diet and the risk of breast cancer.
